Thanks for the complement, but wow is it old.
But the point still stands that your best bet for a good
home studio is either an ice1712 based card, e.g.
the M-audio Delta series, or one of the RME cards.
there are now some interesting usb devices that are reported
to work but I don't know anything else.
Before buying anything, I'd search teh ALSA list archives
and the linux-audio-user archives for reports of success or trouble
with the card you're interested in.
Note that the ice1712 cards are all a little different...
some work easily out-of-the-box, some have given people trouble.
And some versions of ALSA have been more or less broken with
these cards. Get the latest ALSA, maybe even from CVS.

Delta 66 and the Omni I/O box.
I really couldn't be happier with this and the support under Linux.

ALSA 0.9rc6 is fubar for ice1712 but the latest CVS works fine.
Envy24control had some problems but when I talked it over with Jaroslav
he asked me to download the latest and check it. All is well. No
problems now.

This is a (serious) bug in the alsa-0.9.0rc6 ice1712 driver. There is
a fix in CVS, but I'm not using that yet because of the inconvenience
of upgrading the drivers.
As a workaround, I use envy24control (compiled as above). Under
"Hardware Settings" first set the "Master Clock" rate to "S/PDIF
In".
Then, set it to "Int 44100". For some reason, the rc6 driver won't
let you set "Int 44100" directly without using this trick.
So I guess I have to wait for the next Alsa release
and a new Debian package,
cause compiling from CVS is too dirty for me.
Try a newer version of envy24control. It's easy to do, and I think
you'll be please with the result.

The sliders effect the amount of signal sent to the digital mixer. The
mute buttons mute the signal to the digital mixer. Switch to the
Patchbay/Router tab and select Digital Mix L and Digital Mix R under H/W
Out 1 (L) and H/W Out 2 (R). Then you should be able to hear volume
changes when moving the sliders.

You was right with the faders. I should have fiddled around a little bit with
the settings before.

I've been reading some stuff lately (I wish I could remember where)
about problems with USB and audio. I wouldn't recommend that path. If
he's going to go with an ice1712/envy24 card and he wants to put
together a small studio then the best bets are the M Audio Delta 44,
Delta 66, Delta 1010, Terratec EWS88MT, or ST Audio C-Port DSP2000
depending on how many channels you need and what features you want. I'm
using the DSP2000 with no problems and I know that there are quite a few
people using the Delta cards (I'm not sure about the Delta 1010LT
though).

You have to be carefull with ice1712 cards if you run ATI Rage card for
video, I had that combo and couldn't get an undistorted recording with my
Audiophile card, then I sold the Audiophile and went back to using my
sblive card and all the latency issues went away.

Hoontech has a great Knowledge Base
(http://www.staudio.de/kb/index.asp?kb=staudio) that covers problems
with their card (DSP24) and other hardware. It's really for any card
with the envy24 chipset. The ATI Rage is listed. It's alsoa problem
with some VIA chipset motherboards. I dumped my ATI and got a $35
NVIDIA card. Works fine.
