I'm experimenting with a stock Mandrake 2.6.11 kernel, by default it does not have preemtion enabled and the performance is MUCH better than the one I rebuilt with preemption turned on... go figure?! I did make some other changes, like optimizing for athlon and enabling security capabilities. I'm going to test more, if I find something out I'll post it.

I use gentoo. The 12-rc3 is in the vanilla sources. I usually install the gentoo-sources because it has patches for the amd. Might switch over though. Anyone else have their thumb drives stop working though? That one really upsets me too. On 5/6/05, patrick <puredata(a)11h11.com> wrote:

I installed 12-rc4 and am so far happy except the thumb drive thing. I have narrowed it down to thumb drives formatted in msdos fat or vfat. I can mount a thumb drive in ext2 and reiser but not fat. So I am trying for help in comp.os.linux.misc since this part isn't an audio issue. If anyone here knows anything though... The problem I was noticing earlier was because I was browsing and listening to mp3 at same time through jack. It seems I used to be able to do that np, but maybe not. If I turn jack off and use alsa it is fine. Maybe adding the lsm would make it better as I could give jack a higher priority. Right now I am trying without patches and then add as I get things to work. What would be nice is if I could just leave jack running all the time and have everything work. Did you make sure the new kernel has msdos and vfat support compiled in?

Of course not. I made modules and loaded them.

Of course not. I made modules and loaded them.

OK. What exactly are the symptoms when you go to mount the thumb drive? Apparently there was an issue with some partition types not being recognized, that should be fixed for 2.6.12. But that should not prevent you from mounting msdos & vfat partitions.

I get one of these: root@bart nroberts # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/cdrom/ mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1, or too many mounted file systems Same if I say -t vfat or -t fat. This happens even if I format from linux with mkfs.msdos. I only get it with fat systems so far. Like if I format with mke2fs I can mount just fine. Jack has become pretty unusable also. Just playing an mp3 from xmms cuts out 2-3 times a second. I am going to try loosing the kernel preemption and see if that helps. On a better note though, my DVD burner works now...woohoo. It didn't before. This is an AMD64 BTW.

Are there any known issues with certain options? Like I am wondering if "Kernel Userspace Events" might be causing problems. Are there any options I do NOT want turned on that might cause latency issues?

Pft....dmesg might have helped.... Unable to load NLS charset cp437 FAT: codepage cp437 not found So that problem is fixed. Onward and foward to the cut-out issues...

For future reference, -t msdos would have worked (but no long filenames).

Oh yeah, thats right. I was trying -t fat. I haven't done msdos fat in years...kind of forgot the right magic words. On the rest. I patched pam for the nice-rt thing and got it to install. Ran jackd and got mad because it wasn't working and then tried with the --realtime switch and everything is honky dory. Just played an mp3 through jack while compiling the kernel and didn't get a single skip.
