Looking for some suggestions here. I've had a Maudio 2496 card for a few
years. Works fine for audio, but if I use an the external midi ports it
cause random freezes to my system. Only solution at this point is to hit
the <RESET> button. Not much fun.
Right now I'm using Ubuntu with the 2.6.20-16-lowlatency kernel and alsa
1.0.14rc1. What is interesting is that I had the same problems when I
first installed the card and was running a kernel much older and Mandrake.
Checking some of the alsa mailing lists I found a discussion about this
dating back to 2004 ... so I'm assuming that whatever the problem was
... it's been fixed? Nope.
For the past few years I've been using a usb-midi thingie, and that does
work fine. But, I'm running out of USB ports, and I'd like to dedicate
the usb-midi thing to my laptop. So, I tired the 2496 again ... same
problem.
So, should I just forget about the 2496 and buy yet-another-card? Do
something creative with the usb port situation? Or does someone know a
simple solution for the 2496 problem.

Probably not a lot of help to you but I've been using a 2496 for a
couple of years with no problems at all. First on a noname 32bit
machine with Mandrake 9.1, now on a 64bit dual core machine built
especially for audio with 64studio.

Yes, I forgot to mention that I'd had a motherboard swap since getting
the card. I'm starting to suspect the card, not the motherboard or software.

I don't know if this is of much help either: But I have a delta 1010LT
(which I suppose has relatively similar hardware components) and I had no
problems either. Except its initial support. But since 2.4.19 and alsa 0.9.5
it runs cleanly.
Did you ever try it under windows or with OSS (if it supports the 2496 after
all), so you can be sure of the card? Or did you try to put it in a different
computer/slot, so you can be sure of your other hardware working correctly?
I don't know how much of those tests would be necessary, but it might be
worth the efford.

No, don't have windows on this machine. Guess I could swap in a harddrive.
But, the problem is that it is so erratic. I've been playing midis for a
few days with the 2496 with no problems ... then, it hangs. It could be
a sequence in the midi file, but I had 3 hangs this morning with the
same file and player (aplaymidi) .. but the hangs were NOT in the same
place.
Heat on the card? Stray gamma rays?
I could boot into windows, play files for awhile, and not prove anything.
Probably easiest just to get a new card.

I also don't have that problem with my AP 2496. :( I think, in your
case I would just get creative with USB. USB hubs are cheap, and I
think, if you get one and plug non-critical stuff into it like mouse
or keyboard, you should be able to make some spare USB ports for midi
available. Actually I don't use the midi port on my AP anymore because
all midi gear I actually use also has USB connectors, and I prefer
using these.
