Hello,
Would any of you know of a good way to synthesize a bagpipe sound? I
suppose there might be some bagpipe samples but would be interested in
approaching the sound synthetically.
I once made an attempt on my Roland D50 (yes, years ago...) but found it
quite difficult to get but just a convincing result.
Any suggestion?

Well, here's an amazing amount of info on the sonic theory and tuning
behind the Highland Pipes:

So maybe that's a start to thinking about the synthesis...
I prefer to use a controller (like ePipes or Akai wind controller)
against samples otherwise it just doesn't sound realistic.

It really depends what you want to achieve. Making pipe-like
sounds
using simple additive synthesis and effects is relatively simple. In
fact, you can even have a grand time making pipe sounds with an electric
guitar and a bunch of pedals. :) Of course, it's easier to make pipe
ensemble sounds, as you can use detune and chorus effects to make it
sound more credible. If, on the other hand, you're out to reproduce a
lone highland pipe in all its splendour, well, just forget it. Your best
option would probably be to buy good quality samples and a specialised
controller as McCoy pointed out.

Theres a good example of a synthetic bagpipe in CLM/Snd. The approach
here is wave-shaping & fm-synthesis. Heres a listen:

Hello Noel!
Sorry, didn't follow the complete thread, but did you ever try Aeolus? I
know, it's an organ synthesizer, but the main parts are there. You can use the
editor. In a workshop given by Fons some years ago, he demonstrated some
tweaking and it sounded very much like a bagpipe. I suppose it's a nice point
to start, where the sound is concerned. If you want to get more of the
specific techniques, I think your tools of choice will be others.
