Hi everyone!
I'm looking for a tool to do something like internet-telephony. My needs and
prerequisits:
* compatible with windows and Linux
* Linux Command-line (or textmode client)
* Best to work with JACK or at least ALSA
* Something tha work nicely with a 2mBit line
can anyone suggest something?

Hi!
anyone here got ohphone or something compatible running, so I could have a
try. I'm not yet sure if I'm doing it right, and I can't call myself. :-(
I used audio device "Default", which I suppose is my alsa,default device,
which should use the jack-plugin, for I configured it that way...

Freeswitch[0] fits this profile. It can function as a SIP[1] voip
phone and it supports pulseaudio, which you can hook up as a jack
client. Everything is command based.

Freeswitch[0] fits this profile. It can function as a SIP[1] voip
phone and it supports pulseaudio, which you can hook up as a jack
client. Everything is command based.

I've installed freeswitch and read the getting started guide as well as
browsed through the configs. But I think there was a miss-specification on my
part.
I am NOT looking for some real VOIP tool, where you have to register with a
provider, I wouldn't know how to pay them anyway, but that's a different sad
story. :-)
No I was looking for swomething like U believe old "gnome-meeting" for
console. Something where I sit at my PC, he sits at his, and we can use our
PCs to chat point-to-point.
I have to work on a webpage, but this requires me to have a "right eye", the
one who sees the finer details for me. So we decided, I wokr at home and he
works at home. Only because my phone is not nice to handle while typing and
reading with both HANDS, we decided to go for something with mics and
headsets... :-)
I hope you know what I'm looking for now and could maybe help me.

Maybe linphonec, the console version of linphone, is the right tool for
you. It is based on the SIP protocol and I believe you can use it
without registering to a server.

linphone-nox sounds like a possibility.
ohphone also does command-line, and is compatible with netmeeting.
and ihu which uses a peer-to-peer protocol of it's own and has a
commandline interface. And can use jack or alsa.

At least my SIP-provider (http://www.sipgate.de/) is free of charge for calls
to others registered with the same provider or with one of its
associates/partners. And you get a real telephone number to be called by
others from their normal phone to your computer. :-)

Well, you never have to register with anything if you got a real VOIP
tool and you certainly don't need to register anywhere with
freeswitch.

Linphone will also limpingly do it, but it does not in any way work
with jack.
There are also micro clients, like SofSipCli, using gstreamer, but you
still will have problems with jack, unless this one actually can use
jack through pulseaudio.

My advice is going with freeswitch, because it's the most powerful
command line SIP tool you'll ever find and it can be adapted to your
needs.

Free Wrold Dialup and ekiga.net will give you accounts without you needing to
pay. As long as you call another such user, calls are free. Just don't call
land lines, or cell phones, etc.

hi Julien,
you could try pjsua (see http://www.pjsip.org), it's a simple
command-line SIP client. I've installed it but never used it
because i couldn't find enough time to get a SIP account, to
configure it and to set it up... So don't know to which exctent it
is actually usable. People around me seem to use it successfully
though.
