Greetings,
As many of you know, the Linux Journal has been running video
presentations in lieu of some written articles. They've asked me to make
a few, so I thought I'd ask on this list to find out what topics LAU
folk might want to see illuminated via video. Feel free to suggest any
relevant topic, whether in the production realm or desktop entertainment.
FYI: Current systems running here include JAD 1.0, 64 Studio 2.1 and
3.0b, and Ubuntu Jaunty. I finally got a copy of a recent Fedora and
will install Planet C on one of these machines too.
So, what would you like to see from Studio Dave ?

But I think it would be good to do some newbies stuff too:
- starting and configuration of qjackctl
- connect different apps with qjackctl (audio and midi)
- sync applications (hydrogen and ardour) with qjackctl
- midi stuff, hardware, samples, midi channels, midi outs etc.

Including (or specifically targeting) what can go wrong, which error
messages that produces (and where those messages appear), and how to fix
it. The most common problems only.
Also some hints about how the user can learn to track down problems them
selves (simple things like running the application from the commandline
and posting error messages to google).

I'm a newbie and I initially joined this list to get help setting up my
Phonic Helix Board 24 with ffado and Linux. I didn't really have any
interest in MIDI or synthesisers, but since then I've read loads on this
list about that and I'm starting to get interested. But I don't know
where to begin, what I would need, etc. I know there are loads of howtos
on various websites, but a video guide would be great - so much more
absorbing and easier to follow.
How about quick introductions to some of the more popular notation
editors? I'm still using a Windows notation editor under wine rather
than making the jump to a native Linux one, as they all seem to involve
a fairly steep learning curve.

Judging from general questions from LAU and people who asks me about anything
music related:
Getting started series for several main stream stuff like:
*Putting together a Linux based Sound Studio on:

*Linux sound Infra Structure(Jack and Sound and MIDI connections with

IMO, article series with this topics with corresponding videos would be nice.

Non nerds needs gentle help in order to not be afraid of Linux and nerds will

So, what would you like to see from Studio Dave ?
*I. Getting sounds out of midi sequencers.*
I found personally the whole process of figuring how to get Linux Midi
devices make a sound quite painful. I am into Linux for just more than a
year.
1. For Rosegarden, there's an excellent Manual explaining every detail. But
it took me days of reading to understand the philosophy.
2. After 12 months I finally managed to get sound on Muse
3. I somehow figured to get sound on seq24, but even today I don't
understand how to start/stop/forward/rewind that machine easily. (I gave
up). Working in the song editor? Always get stuck.
4. LinuxSampler? Rocket science to me then!
Don't get me wrong, I totally enjoy these days working with LinuxSampler,
Rosegarden and Muse, but I wished the process of learning was less painful.
*II. Plugins*.
One presses the 'add plugin' on any application and is immediately inundated
with hundreds of plugins.
Which one to choose? what are the good, known ones? In Audacity they are
even listed only alphabetically.
I can spend an hour, two or three testing plugins, but I can't spend 3 weeks
testing them all. After 16 months on Linux Audio, I do have my few personal
favorites, but have probably only tested a third of them. Some guidance
there with a video would be really appreciated.
Finally,*
III. Synths*.
Where, what, how to easily set them up and use them? Again, I personally
know a bit about them, probably a third of them, but a nice video with some
options that the synths provide I (and many others) would find very useful.
My 2p.
PS: (afterthought) I teach kids and get them interested in Linux Audio on a
daily basis. *LMMS* seems to be the door for music production for them.
Lately it's been nicely developed and maintained. A *cool video* about the
main features of this graphically beautiful app (with some youngster
clicking the mouse?) will get many young souls interested in the wonderful
Linux Music World.
(I overdone it again!:-)
Hail for your excellent work on spreading the word and teaching us all in
many new and interesting things.

* and *Pure Data*. What are these doing? How they do it? Why they do it that
way? Does one disappear if a wrong button/mouse click is pressed? what are
the known planets that these programs are used? Who............

Anything workflow related would be gold.
First I agree with Rosea and Atte that a jack setup tutorial including
troubleshooting would have top priority, but after that it's imho not
so wise to focus on single apps but on ways to achieve a certain goal.

I am running an AMD64 machine and having difficulty with Ubuntu 9.10, so
soon I could be
shopping for another distribution.
Knowing that you run multiple distributions, could you compare the
advantages of each ?
* Is there one with a RT kernel ?
* Which ones will Rosegarden NOT complain that timing is not fast enough ?
* Which is easiest to configure ?
* Is Pulseaudio a good addition...or is it a problem ?
* Which ones are reasonably up to date ?
* Which ones require, or would be best with, a kernel recompile ?
* Which have the best support (paid or otherwise) ?
* Which is best for 64 bit machines ? Which applications need to be upgraded
for 64 bit architecture ?
These are but a few of the questions that come to mind.
Your thoughts ?

64Studio has a version for 64-bit. Probably others do, too.

Multicore processors and JACK - isn't that what jackdmp AKA Jack2 is for
dealing with? I don't know if any other audio apps have problems with
multicore processors.
