Hi LAU,
This is my first posting here. Hope to do lots more...
I have a M-Audio Delta 1010LT multitrack sound card in my computer and am
having lots of trouble with it.
I'm running Linux 2.4 (Fedora Core 1) with the "Planet CCRMA" audio
environment on a Pentium 4 PC.
I use Audacity 1.2.3 for recording, etc.
Everything worked fine with the built-in (stereo) sound on my motherboard.
I installed the 1010LT and rebooted. The computer found the card and seemed
to be happy with it.
But many things seem to be wrong.
I'm using envy24control to get the mixer, patchbay, sliders, etc.
My main (first) question is how to get more than 2 channels recording at the
same time?
When I pick 4 channels in Audacity, it does indeed record 4 tracks but the
second two are copies of the first 2.
The little drop-down menu in Audacity for selecting the source (line-in,
mic, etc) is empty and the input and output sliders seem to have no effect.
Any helpful tips or pointers would sure be appreciated. I'm very new to
Linux so you might need to t-a-l-k r--e--a--l s--l--o--w--l--y

I'm not sure that Audacity is JACK-aware, so I don't know if you will
be able to do this type of routing. I know that you can do simple
multitrack recording with Audacity, but for real multitrack recording,
you might want to check out Ardour, which is similar to ProTools. I
am not aware of a way to record different tracks from different inputs
simultaneously with Audacity.

Try ecasound for starters. It is great commandline software for
multichannel recording and I have tested it with 1010LT.

10 channel recording goes like:
ecasound -f 32,10,96000 -i alsa -o 10ch.wav
-f is the format; 32 bit, 10 channels, 96000Hz
You might need to specify the alsa device to use, if your motherboard
soundcrap^H^H^Hcard uses alsa too

I'm not sure if this has something to do with Audacity not being natively
alsa-compatible. It uses alsa through Portaudio, but I don't know whether
that's same as natively using alsa. You could try getting oss-drivers for
Delta1010LT (they are nowadays free of charge from www.opensound.com) but
I really can't say if that does the trick.
Better ways may exist, like ecasound and ardour

Did you disable the onboard sound in the BIOS? If not, configuration
might get a little tricky. Reading the Planet CCRMA docs on configuring
alsa and looking at your .asoundrc file might come after that.

Ardour users mailing list and can ask questions there. It's a very
newbie friendly list.

I am running Ardour with delta1010LT, all from the Planet. I have
absolutely no problems. If you installed the packages from PlanetCCRMA
then you already have Jack and Ardour. All should be accessible from the
neat menu entries. I'd be more than happy to help you with this off list
if you like.
Also, in addition to the ardour list, you should subscribe to the
planetCCRMA list.

Thanks for the good tip. I disabled the on-board audio in BIOS and things
started working much better and consistently. l sure should have thought of
that but didn't! One more lesson learned...
I now have Audacity recording 8 tracks simutaneously. I still don't have
any control of source or input/output levels inside Audacity but can live
with this since it's all in "envy24controll". I need to get another monitor
so I can have all the control stuff, etc visible while Audacity is going
full screen.
It's only money... 8^)
Thanks again for the help. I still hope to try Ardour/Jack some day as
well.

I just posted a reply to one of these responses stating I got Audacity
recording 8 tracks through my 1010LT by disabling the on-board audio.
But thanks to you and others for the great tips. I do hope to try Ardour
some day and I may take you up on your kind offer of help on that.

For what it's worth...
I struggled with the notion of where to set input levels. I was used to
using a cassette based multitrack recorder which allowed you to control
the input signal with the same mixing board as the outbound signal. I
was completely confused when I used Ardour and had no way to adjust the
input levels.
I'm still new at this, but I think that this is a shift in thinking. The
level is set by the preamp and the a/d converter. Both, as you now know,
are accessible via the envy24 control. I don't know how good the 1010lt
onboard preamps are, but I primarily record through an outboard stereo
preamp, so I use this to set levels and I generally use the Ardour
monitors to check the levels. I leave a/d and d/a set to max and turn
off the onboard preamps. But, you can obviously use the onboard preamps
and set them, then still monitor levels with the meters on Ardour or
Audacity. There is also a program called meterbridge which give great
meters for monitoring input signal.
Yes, I have 2 monitors and they work great!
