I'm gonna bite the bullet and rip all my music to play it around
the house via my computers. I've got really good music gear
for the job in my home studio. But, my turntable and record
collection is just about as far from there in my house as is
possible. I don't want to move either set of gear. Instead
I want to get sound adapter for a laptop I've got and do the
ripping at the location where my turntable resides now. My
laptop has USB. I don't know if it's USB1 or USB2. But, I can
get a cardslot to USB adapter for cheap, if need be.
I'm planning to store my digital music losslessly, in either FLAC
or WAVPACK. I want the music to sound as good after being ripped
as it did on my pretty good home stereo via the turntable. I
know I need at least 2 channels, but I'd go with 4 channels on
the adapter, if it didn't cost me double.
What would you recommend as a sound adapter for this job, and why?

Neither of my laptops is really all that powerful of a machine.
One of them is a 700MHz Pentium II. But, I can run Audacity on
them for post processing quite well, with patience that is.

but I had one that worked just fine for stereo recording. Until the built in
sound card part went south. The guy at the music store says alesis will not

You could check out the Rane Serato SL-1, which is said to work with
ALSA and the xwax vinyl timecode system. It is USB, and it has a
built-in RIAA amp. I haven't tested this myself, but you might want to
look into it. As far as I understand it is detected as a standard
soundcard, so it could be used for what you're trying to do, not only
for timecode vinyl. Here's a guide on setting it up:

RIAA amp, plug it into some good device with a decent A/D converter and

Interesting. I hadn't thought of going that route. I wonder if I
could get both the used DAT player and a S/PDIF i/o card with a USB
interface for less than the price of just a descent USB connected
audio interface.

The Terratec Phase 26 USB is very good value for the money IMO, if you
buy the unbundled version without Windows software. It also has a
phono input and a phono pre-amp, so you could directly connect your
turntables to the card. RIAA equalisation however is done in the
MS-Windows software of the Phase 26, so you'd need to use a software
solution for that as well. I'm not sure, if gramofile can do that
automatically, if not, there's a LADSPA plugin somewhere.
Or use your existing hifi amp between the turntable and the
soundcard.

scratches -- which can indeed result in a recording that sounds better
than the original record.
I would recommend looking for a decent soundcard that'll capture at
24-bit resolution, since the extra headroom is handy when digitising
records. You don't need to worry so much about setting the input gain
correctly, since you can capture at a relatively low level, then
normalise the resulting recording.

The Tascam US-144 is apparently supported, but not the newer version
US-144L (I think it was L, anyway, it's reported to not work).
I own and sometimes even use a Roland/Edirol UA-25 that is comparable
to the Tascam. There's also an Alesis which offers quite the same and
would have been my second choice after the UA-25. I think there was
another one, but I can't remember the name. It should be possible to
find the thread from a couple of months back.
The 48kHz/96kHz thing is, to my knowledge, a bandwidth limitation of
the usb 1.1 'standard'. With the UA-25 one can switch to 96kHz, but in
that mode it is recording only. I know of no usb audio interface
without that limitation.

ADC+preamp, DAC, preamp, etc.
its about 99, and i think the best solution here. but then i have one, so maybe im
biased?
i havent acrtually tested to see if it works with snd-usb-audio (probabyl does) as i just
use a 1/8" cable to an indigo io
