Hi,
I'm looking for Ecasound-compatible plugins (e.g. LADSPA or non-GUI LV2)
that do various types of noise generation. I've found ones which generate
white or pink noise, but I'd like something that goes beyond that: e.g. S&H
(Sample & Hold) noise with variable parameters, or even other noise-like
sound effects such as rattling sounds and the like.
Could anyone give me any recommendations, or point me in the right
direction? I'm very new to the Linux audio plugins world, so I'm probably
missing an obvious approach re how to go about looking for such things.

Since I am quite sure you can't control effects parameters of other
Ecasound chain operators (effects) with LADSPA or LV2 effect, I will
assume that you'd like these noise generator to produce audio.
I can't suggest a plugin that will do what you need, but there are a few
synthesizers that can. If the commandline is a requirement, there is
still a choice to generate different types of noise and noise-based
sounds. Yoshimi offers interesting possibilities. So would synth
languages like Csound or SuperCollider with quite powerful and varied
modules to produce different sorts of noise.
Should you need a random S&H to control other Ecasound effect parameters
the -km (MIDI control) switch with some clever MIDI generator might be
helpful. There are even quite high-level MIDI programming/scripting
packages for all kinds of languages offering rather simple interfaces to
quickly hack something useful. I know of packages for Python, Perl, c,
c++ and - I think - LUA. Again a program like Csound could also be used
to generate the necessary controller data.
Is any of that helpful? If not, perhaps a use-case scenario with
requirements and limitations of the system or your work environment
might help to approach a feasible soltuion.

if possible, you're probably better off using a MIDI-controlled sample
player running on a collection of one-shot recorded noise samples.
do you have a collection of such samples available, or perhaps just
one to demonstrate what you are looking for? after all, "noise" is a
rather broad phenomenon.

I'm making all my music on a modular, but often bring in "noisy" samples
that I generated or processed on my linux laptop. Obviously offline
rendering of "noisy" samples is not the same as a dynamically controlled
plugin in ardour or the like, and what I look for is not as much a static
noise spectrum/waveform as musically useful but noisy samples. With that in
mind here's a few strategies I had success with:
1) Databending non musical files, by forcing sox to interpret them as
audio. Works great with binary files (/usr/bin is a goldmine) and requires
quite a bit of work afterwards to select the interesting portions of the
samples. The middle section for instance tends to be more or less white
noise.
2) Cecilia is always awesome.
3) http://www.websdr.org/ is a great source, takes some curating to get
something useful though.

Hi,
Just wanted to say a quick "thank you" to everyone who replied to my
message - some really interesting ideas there. My apologies for the delay
in replying.
Thanks to Jeanette's message, I got curious about Csound, and started
reading up on it; it looks like that's a better option for me than Ecasound
+ modules. So, I'll be looking into that option. I'll assume, unless
someone tells me otherwise, that, if I have questions on that as I move
forward, those would be better addressed to the Csound users list.

You can ask questions here, but on the Csound mailinglist you'll have a
much greater chance of getting more detailed answers and there are the
developers too. All in all, I found it a very helpful and kind place to
be, welcoming new users as well as the initiates of the arcane arts. :)

I suspect, at some point, I'm going to end up looking for a freelancer or a
software company experienced in Csound, for a small commercial project
(might just be a few hours' work). I had a quick look around to see how
easy such a person/company would be to find, but my first impression was
that they're very thin on the ground - or else they're hiding ;). Would
the Csound users list be a good place to look for that - or, indeed, this
list? If there are other good options too, I'd really appreciate someone
letting me know. (I did look on Upwork, but there was a grand total of 3
freelancers who mentioned Csound in their profiles there!)
