After about 10 years of frustration, I'm a bit tired of alsa.
Does anyone know if OSS supports proper software mixing?
Is the alsa emulation working somewhat okay?
Are there any problems configuring the machine to use more than one card?

don't support 64bit systems correctly?

Why do you think there is a shortage of 64-bit drivers? Linux is not
Windows XP.
The problem is generally with older software or closed source software
that still uses OSS (sadly some brand new closed source software still
does this) or tries to use 'hw:0' instead of 'default'. That kind of
thing. 32- or 64-bit is not a problem at all.

Sure, there are ways around it, but specifying something like hw:2 works
easily.

Btw, I've been running 64 Studio 2.1 since it appeared. It's installed
on an AMD 3200+ in 64-bit mode. Flash is a bit hit or miss here,
sometimes it works perfectly, other times I have to restart Mozilla to
get it happening. But alas, it doesn't work with JACK running (no
audio). Ditto for Skype.
However, this box (Big Black) is primarily a production machine, so I
really don't give a hoot whether it supports Flash/Skype/Facewash or
whatever happens to be the audio/video comm-app du jour. I have a second
machine for those pleasures. Big Black kicks ass running Ardour, JAMin,
JACK-Rack, etc., and that's what I need it for.
Ah yes, return with us now to Studio Dave and the thrilling days of the
task-dedicated UNIX workstation. Man, if my Skool gets any Older I'll
have to retire soon. ;)

That's what pulseaudio is for. One of the reasons I left Ubuntu was that
they didn't have pulseaudio-module-jack, because with that, I have JACK
for audio work and pulse for everything else, feeding into JACK. In my
current distro most just use JACK and its alsa plugin, but you need a
relatively recent alsa to do that well (ie. without the problems you're
experiencing) which I don't think 64studio has.
