Can anyone recommend a good sound card and speakers that works with
Windows and Linux, that are reasonably priced (around $650 for both),
and has up to date drivers?
I was thinking of going with the Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro, good choice?

What are your needs? What styles of music?

Are you talking about production or general audio (eg. gaming, movies,
listening to music)? There's a fine line between high-end
(multimedia) mainstream cards and (semi-) professional ones.

I recently went thru this. What I ended up doing was using the
integrated sound of the motherboard, and spending the entire budget on
a pair of Genelec 8030a active monitors. Your budget only buys one of
the pair, but they do sound wonderful. I use linux for midi into
hardware synths and hardware sequencers, so YMMV.

If you're only going to use software instruments you don't really need a
high-end card at all, just get something cheap with SPDIF output and a
pair of active monitors with digital input (or a separate amp with
digital input).

I just set my studio up with a M-Audio 2496 card and M-Audio desktop
speakers, each for around $99. I've really been amazed by the sound of
the speakers. I don't remember the model, they are the cheapest they
make.
