Try changing the Gnome/GTK font:
System->Preferences->Appearance and fonts.
Haven't tried it, but I think it works.

As Paul said, the ardour2_ui_*.rc files define absolute font sizes for the
several custom widget styles. About a year ago i maintained my own bright theme
file for a couple of months (until the theme manager appeared in svn).
The whole issue depends not only on font sizes, but also on what idea GNOME or
GTK has got about screen resolution. So, if you tweak resolution in the GNOME
font setup (IIRC it's in an extra dialog accessible via a button "Advanced"
or
similar) until a size of 8 pt. for your standard system font looks good to you,
you _should_ get similar sizes in ardour, as the ardour2_ui*.rc files use
"sans 8" as "standard" size.
And if someone is not using GNOME? There is a little utility called gtk-chtheme
which allows to switch gtk2 system theme and font family/size. But there's no
way i know of to change GTK's idea of resolution that way, and ardour will
pick up only font family from that.

i very much doubt it. its not easy to change. there is no way to change
it from within the program, for a start.
the fonts are all defined in ardour2_ui.rc, which is generated at build
time. that file is installed at the system level, but you can also have
a copy of it in ~/.ardour2.
at some point (soon!) we need to rationalize the font use down to the
same 4 sizes we use on OS X. on X11 right now, there are more than a
dozen different font definitions. its a mess.

it does use gtk, but the ardour2_ui files explicitly state font sizes etc
for everything. pretty much everything to do with your system settings seem
to be ignored and everything is set manually. i've been playing around and i
might try to see if i can get it to use system settings for the ui, but i
imagine it will look pretty nasty :)

sorry to reply to my own post, but i found a quick way to give yourself a
'preview' of what ardour looks like with the system settings. just add an
empty 'ardour2_ui_dark.rc' file into the '.ardour2' directory in your
home
directory. looks quite interesting with some gtk engines and themes, even
though there are quite a few graphical glitches. it would be nice for the
custom controls (faders etc) to play nice with system colours, but it is an
interesting start. one gotcha is to remember that the 'record buttons' etc
won't flash when armed, as that is done with custom gtk settings.
it would be nice for there to be a 'minimalistic' ardour2_ui file that just
contained the necessities such as flashing record button and left the rest
to the system as a third option (after dark and light themes).

ardour uses *color* for a lot more than most office productivity and
home desktop applications. i'm sorry if thats not to your taste. i would
propose to you that its a different class of application that does not
benefit from the rather monochromatic approach that works well for
different classes of applications.
"just a flashing record button" is a long, long way from the necessities
list. how can you tell when a region is selected? what is the difference
between solo and solo-safe status? how to tell that a region gain line
is active or not? etc. etc. etc. its true that we overuse colors right
now, and that needs to change.
note that you can use the theme manager (Windows -> Theme Manager) to
switch to the "light" theme, which is much closer to the typical
graytone themes of most default toolkit themes.
if people write more themes, and they are good, we'll be happy to
include them with ardour.

oh, don't get me wrong. i really like the ardour colour scheme. i'm just
playing around really. i think the clearlooks engine looks a little dated,
but it is certainly not something that worries me or puts me off. i was more
thinking of people who like their custom system theme to perhaps have an
option where ardour matches as close as possible. the main things that stuck
out were the faders (although i still think they need something to look a
little more interesting, but that is just me, not something i think that
should be pursued).

This is already in the works, in the form of cairo, which gtk relies
on and which gnome builds on.
