Hi there,
Well I managed to find Frank's post about the USB audiophile not working on kernel 2.6
all too late:

- I got one thinking it would work for some reason. :( *sigh*
So it works on 2.4? :/ And are there any good audio-oriented distributions available using
2.4? (preferably one that is still maintained if possible ;))

i am really not sure about, but that card should work with 2.6 kernels:

the AP-PCI is such a good and popular card, probably M-Audio saw fit
to market a "broken" USB card under the same name because otherwise it
wouldn't have found any buyers at all. ;)
Anyway, I think, in recent 2.6 kernels/ALSA-CVS, a lot of work on
getting this USB card to run was made, so if one is forced to use one,
s/he might be more lucky now and should try the latest and greatest
ALSA and follow the included documentation [1]. But still I would
avoid to buy one if shopping for a new USB card.

Incidentally, i just checked on the m-audio website and the 2496 is
about half the price of the USB unit. So why buy USB when it's not as
good and more expensive!

Buh? I had one, just sold it recently. It worked fine on linux kernel 2.6. The ALSA driver
for it included some weird parameters to pass the module that would change the bitrate and
sample depth, but I don't remember if those worked.
I sold it because it required a power cube and had only RCA line-level outputs/inputs, and
the interface I replaced it with (FastTrack Pro) is USB-powered and has TRS and XLR inputs
as well as TRS and RCA outputs.
