Okay, I'll bite...
This is a very pleasant and enjoyable little piece. It reminds me a bit
of something, but I can't work out what; I want to say early Camel or
maybe Barclay James Harvest, without guitar, but I'm not sure that's it.
Or perhaps Procol Harum without lyrics... never mind, it's good on its
own merits.
I find the transition at 4 seconds in from Hammond to Tron strings and
fretless a little jarring, less so the more I listen to it. Some of the
later ones are fine, I think because there's a little more instrumental
overlap.
The hi-hat I find incredibly distracting, it's way too far left for my
tastes, it could do with being nearer 11 o' clock and possibly lower in
level as well.
I think the fretless bass adds a nice touch.
The Hammond sound is nice. The drum sounds are nice ;-) and the playing
is mostly pretty good -- there's an odd fill or two that doesn't quite
work for me. Around 2.19, the hi-hat/ride fill seems a little awkward.
The tom fill at 3.26 makes sense in light of the one a few seconds
later, but it sounds a little incongruous to me, perhaps a little rushed.
I like the darker section around begins around 3.10, is nicely underway
around 3.20 and especially nice around 3.35.
I couldn't help feeling that, in a few places towards the end where the
main theme returns, it could do with a small triumphant solo, nothing
too flashy, to build the climax that little bit higher -- perhaps a
trumpet might fit the bill nicely. It sounds great as it is, but it
would be the cherry on top of the icing on the Christmas cake ;-)
I detected a few pops and clicks in the Ogg file, e.g. at 42 seconds and
2.30 (I heard others but they don't seem reproducible in either VLC or
Amarok). You perhaps need to be a little more careful with the level of
your original -- even if it doesn't clip, if it's very close to 0 dBfs
the transcoding to another codec can go over. Both Audacity and Rezound
show quite a few places where it clips.
Anyway, nice playing, I enjoyed it and thanks for sharing.

the sloppiness. I had to be quick, because tomorrow I'm off to Duesseldorf,
and there I should bring this.
When it comes to reminiscence the quiet part in G major is inspired by one
of Atte's pieces (Dejlig er jorden). So thanks Atte! :-) The first three notes
of the vocals inspired me to walk down that line. The rest is a bit FloKi
again, especially the dark bridge. :-)

I always find it very difficult to pull of real drums with
sequencers/computers. But most of the programming here is quite good! I
agree about the panning. Also to me the drums sound too, maybe a bit of
reverb to place the individual drums in the same root could help.
The organ, bass and strings sounds very good, warm and natural to me.

I enjoyed listening to this, but it comes over to me as a really dark
piece of music, not what I would associate with Christmas at all. I'm
totally at a loss as to how to categorise it. In some places it seems to
have a film theme nature, whereas at other points it's almost pop.
Very curios.

Were you writing a tone poem (German-- Tondichtung)? That's how it struck me.
What's the poem or prose to go with this piece?
There's a lot of depression that goes around at Christmas time. I think a lot of
people don't get the real message of Christmas. The Gospels of Mark and John
don't even mention the Christmas story, and I suspect that was deliberate omission on
John's part.
I like tone poems. Keep them coming.

No tone poem really. Just acoustic represnetation of atmosphere.
From what I remember of my protestant relgigion course at school, Marcus
didn't mention the christmas story, becase he was really writing for Jews and
he tried to explain Jesus being the son of God as a function. Lucas made the
most of all the wonders because he was writing for the Greeks (helenic
culture) and others, who were used to wonders, needd them a bit to completely
grasp the importance and specialty of it. But that's just speculation.
I'm still glad you liked it. We'll see what comes next. :-)

An 'omission' w.r.t. what ? What would be the source of this story ?
Anyway, the four gospels as we know them were compiled at least a
hundred years after the facts, and were definitely not written by
the authors they are named after.

the OP's piece! I have looked into this issue myself and the claims you made
are not supported by the evidence; I could give you a full rebuttal but this
a Linux Audio Users list, not a religious forum! I refrain from making
comments in settings like this about my personal convictions regarding moral
issues, even though I fully believe them to be true. Your statement is
narrow-minded a best and is bound to create controversy
I respect your right to speak your mind, but it would be nice if we could
all agree to keep off-topic and inflammatory statements to ourselves. I'm
not a mod so this is just my personal opinion. Linux audio users are a
small enough force as it is; if we must have "skeptic-linux-audio-users" and
"protestant-linux-audio-users" and so on I don't think we'll be much to
reckon with.

The whole book is basically one big REALLY GOOD rant.
To pick a nit, it was the 80's, so IIRC he wrote "BOOM...CHACK...BOOM BOOM
CHACK", otherwise known as "The (early days) R.E.M. Beat", and also used in
pop-metal tunes of the day such as Def Leppard's "Rock of Ages".
I suppose nowadays the corrollary would be "OONTZ OONTZ OONTZ OONTZ" (or
"UNCE UNCE UNCE UNCE" in many European languages).
I have been wanting to quote that for years.

I went to a friend's house the other day and we played a game where we
had to go round making up fantastical stories about our imaginary
uncles. I thought I would see if people liked it here - the uncle thing
takes a bit of the competitive sting out of it. But then I get carried
away by it all anyway. Sorry. :( I guess 'real programmers' are a bit
like imaginary uncles.
I never used to like marketing. Now I'm working for a small company
doing electronics and computer stuff where the boss (who I like in other
ways) keeps selling things that don't exist yet and may not even be
physically possible to construct. This bugs me and I'm not sure what to

I don't find your comments offensive or flaming in the least. But I think if we
continue this discussion, it should not be on the Linux Audio Users list as has been
suggested.
To be honest, I was a little uncertain if I should have made the below comments on this
list in the first place. But I was responding to Julien's mention of his depression
around the Christmas Holiday. His reply made me realize that not all Germans are
Christian, let alone the Lutheran denomination that my mother's entire German family
are. My mistake.

I certainly did not want to offend, nor start a discussion
about anything religious. The comments I made about the
origins of the gospels are what historians have been saying
and what the Vatican has accepted as 'true' for a very long
time. These views do not denigrate the value or beauty of
the gospels in any way.
