Hi all,
this track admittedly doesn't make use of much open source software
(except zita-reverb), but it was recorded on a Linux system
nevertheless, using Tracktion 7 and an el-cheapo Behringer UCA-222 audio
interface.

All sounds are from a Roland JX-03 Boutique synth, except drums, which
are Roland CR78 samples sequenced in the DAW. This a a quick two
evenings weekend jam and the mix is a bit muddy, sorry, it all was
thrown together rather quickly.
I'm happy to report that the Roland JX-03 works very well together with
Linux. USB-MIDI works out of the box (though USB audio doesn't) and
patch up-/download via USB mass storage mode also poses no problems.
The MIDI implementation of the JX-03 has a few minor issues (e.g. no
smoothing of parameter changes via CC, very occassionally hanging notes,
step sequencer always starts on MIDI start), but overall, with the new
firmare that supports parameter editing via CCs, the synth can be easily
integrated into any Linux DAW setup.

Are you sure that those are caused by the Roland device?
How many MIDI channels did you send by a single MIDI interface?
Did you use a lot of CC, SysEx or similar data, maybe unintended after
touch?
Are some events doubled?! Or are some equal events very close to each
other? Perhaps closer in sequence time than the length of MIDI
jitter could be?
If using a lot of CC or similar data, how many ticks are you using with
your sequencer and do you quantise this data and or reduce it?
It might help to disable running status by the sending device,
unfortunately, AFAIK it's not possible to disable running status by
Linux.
Did you test different MIDI interfaces?
I seriously doubt that a Roland synth has a broken MIDI implementation.
Most likely it's an overloaded MIDI interface and/or a bad MIDI
interface.
If not, more likely the issues are cause by the Linux computer, than by
a Roland synth.

I've heard some reviews and demos before, but this song shows it off so

Thanks for the kind words. The first and two last letters of the title
might give away what my main inspiration was for this track. :)
Also, I was listening to a lot of synthwave and www.synthetix.fm lately
and it rubs off.
The synth really sounds great.
Yes, it does sound nice, even though the JX-3P, which I also have, does
still sound better (but the difference is small). The additional
oscillator ranges and waveforms and X-mod capabilities are a very useful
addition on the JX-03, on the other hand. I only wish they would have
made the maximum LFO speed a little faster too.

Thanks for the criticsm. I'm not sure which part you mean, but I think I
know how one could get that feeling. The adlib lead parts in the outro
were done in the last stretch of making the track and I was impatient to
get it done, so these have less then stellar playing ;)
Also there are several arpeggios or ostinatos going on with patterns,
whose length is shorter than a multiple of beats in a bar, so the
pattern start moves. The vibe ostinato is an example of this and it was
played by hand for a few bars and then the recording looped in the DAW.
As the patterns move against each other, they don't always gel together
well. Though I like the effect.
Anyway, this started out as a simple experiment to see how this synth
behaves in a multi track and became a little more but I didn't want to
spend too much time on it, so I'm fully aware that it has its flaws. Its
more a tech demo than a real song.

Not particularly, no. Of course I like a few of their songs (e.g. "The
Robots"), but I don't even know many of their albums in full. I'm what
you may call a synth geek, though, and in extension have an interest in
electronic music, and of course Kraftwerk is a big influence that's felt
throughout the genres there.

Nice jam. Flows by nicely.
I should get to know T7 if only for the comping feature that
I've briefly noticed in a demo, eg. the ability to record multiple
takes (of a solo for instance) and to /easily/ combine the relevant
bits into a new track.
May I ask why you provide a distinct download link instead of enabling
downloads on Soundcloud ?

Huh? I thought I did. I'll check again tomorrow. But anyway, AFAIK SC limits the total
number of downloads of a track. I also like to have everything on my own servers, just in

No way :) This applies to everybody. Zappa, for one, used to patch
live solos from here and there to make a new one for an album release.
