Dear all,
So, I've just upgraded to Ubuntu HH, and I'm using the Linux
2.6.24-17-rt #1 SMP PREEMPT RT kernel on a toshiba laptop with dual core
2.6 GHz processors and 2G of ram, and an intel HDA
I have compiled Ardour 2.4.1 from source with FREESOUND=1 as my only
option. My first problem is that it's using 74% of my CPU just sitting
there. [Anyone else find this?]
I've checked that my system corresponds to this page
http://tapas.affenbande.org/wordpress/?page_id=40 (as this was how I used
to have it set up) and it corresponds, but I'm getting 5% CPU usage from
Jack just sitting doing nothing.
Anyone got any ideas?

The 5% could be normal if you have very low latency settings, since the
lower the latency the higher the cpu usage, even when idle.
Ardour chewing 74% cpu on the other hand is far too much, it should use
nearly nothing. I haven't compiled 2.4.1, Version 2.3 that ships with
hardy appears to work fine here.

Hi,
I've seen this kind of behavior before when RT privileges wasn't setup
(correctly). Default Ubuntu doesn't alter the /etc/security/limits.conf you
might have a look at that?

Hi Jonty,
Did you add yourself to the group audio? Otherwise you wouldn't benefit from
these changes.

Good point; I should have added that in the post. I am part of group
audio. Performance is better thanks to http://ardour.org/node/1759; I#'ve
disabled cpu freq scaling and added the nohz=off line to my kernel options
on bootup, which has helped alot, but I'm still having difficulty. (it
also seemed the problem with ardour was a bad session)
Running Jamin, Ardour and Hydrogen is about it at the moment on my system.
I can get ZYn in there, but Rosegarden is a no. Jamin seems to eat lots of
CPU, which it didn't used to on my other Kubuntu boxes. Anyone got got any
other ideas? What I need is lower latency and I need to be able to run all
the apps I need at the same time. I used to run Hydrogen, Jamin,
Rosegarden and Zyn on my little PC (1.6GHz Athlon, 512M ram, SB Audigy),
but I don't seem to be able to get even there on my 2.6 GHz dual core
Intel with 2G ram, but Intel-HDA. Would really love some help with this or
some links.

You don't want to run jamin with low latency.

Actually you can't really run jamin at low latency, because the math involved
to do the eq and the cross-over adds at least 10ms. And there is a _lot_ of
math involved, so jamin has always been a cpu-hog. And will always be. After
all its a mastering-tool, not a live-usable effect...
Normally one would create a new session with the stero-exports from all the
songs and route that through jamin. No need for low-latency and not much cpu
used by ardour which leaves all the cycles for jamin.
And Zyn (the original) is not realtime-save either. Don't expect miracles
there.
And don't expect miracles from the Intel-HDA. Except for the name there is
nothing really high about these devices. Better add your SB to that machine
to get quality.
Or invest the next lunch money for a real high-quality device.

For compressors look the the SC-compressors (SC4 mono is my choice for almost
everything). These are afaik the compressors used in jamin. But without the
overhead from the cross-over...
And there are also quite a lot of eq's from fons, steve, and others. But I
currently don't recall the actual plugin-names.

It's useful "live" in situations where the latency isn't a problem. I
collect records, and I find jamin's quite handy for listening to
beaten-up LPs through in order to tweak EQ or compression...

It is, but it appears to be kinda funny. I got it a couple of days ago.
The fun thing is that I didn't get it on my test-system that was
upgraded from alpha4, although it has more repositories active
(proposed,..)

The fun thing is that I didn't get it on my test-system that was
upgraded from alpha4, although it has more repositories active
(proposed,..)
