Hello everybody. Have been experimenting lately. Reared on dear old
Dad's Radio Shack cassette recorder and vanilla four-track analog
recording, I've always been pretty much a straight-shootin' audio guy.
Linux audio has opened up new worlds to me. Nowadays, I'm getting
into MIDI, and while I still think it stinks as a general rule (takes
the humanity out of music IMHO), I can see its utility.
So I've been working on getting audio and MIDI channels to play nicely
together through JACK, and I finally got it down (at least the
basics). The long-term vision is to have a band jam live in pure
audio as a MIDI engineer sets down a fresh electronic groove,
something like what the Talking Heads did live but with a 21st Century
twist.
My first effort was just a technical experiment to get everything
plugged in. It's no great composition, but it brought the vision a
little closer to reality. The mix was a quickie, as was the "song"
itself -- took longer to plug everything into JACK than it did to
actually record and mix. This won't sound like much to many of you
pros and old hands, but it represents a major breakthrough for me.
Since lam.fugal.net is down for the count, here it is. Feedback would
be appreciated, but please be gentle in your criticism as I am a
novice and a sensitive type.

Charles the bass just buzzed my speakers out. Beat was ok but over ridden
with buzz. Probably ok on a set of up town speakers.

I think instruments take the humanity out of music. Far better to have
unaccompanied voices.

Great point. For that matter, I think sound takes the humanity out of
music. Much better to express everything in musical or mathematical
notation and leave it up to the imagination. Beethoven didn't need no
stinkin' sound.

Actually, he did. He just couldn't hear it through his hearing loss, but
he could feel the vibrations. That's one reason he liked thunderous bass
and playing pianos so hard he broke them. ;-)

Btw, it may interest some to know that the Amish consider instruments a
worldly vanity. No instruments are used in their music, which is
virtually all church music. A friend here who visits Amish country
regularly tells me that everyone in an Amish family sings, and as far as
he could tell they all sing quite nicely. He said that their
entertainments often took the form of after-meal family singing.
Would that more of us might do likewise... :)

Thanks. I grabbed it and installed. And, the reply to list button
appears, but doesn't do anything. I'm thinking it might be the version
issue they talk about??? I'm not about to recompile TB for this.
Why is this the only list on which I seem to have this problem? I seem
to remember some discussion about 1/2 year ago, but it didn't register
with me at the time.

Other churches have held that in the past. I'm Christian, but don't
happen to consider instruments a "worldly vanity" any more than I would
consider some the excellent tools and furniture that the Amish invented.
No instruments are used in their music, which is
virtually all church music. A friend here who visits Amish country
regularly tells me that everyone in an Amish family sings, and as far as
he could tell they all sing quite nicely. He said that their
entertainments often took the form of after-meal family singing.
Best singers I know in my collection of friends are an Episcopal priest
and his family. He has formal voice training and sings extremely well.
His wife sings well but doesn't have that same level of voice training.
His daughter sings extremely well, and has sung in professional-level
choirs from an early age. Even their son sings well, although he lacks
training due to learning disabilities.
