Announcing the latest release of the Phase Harmonic Advanced Synthesis
EXperiment (first release featuring a GUI), available for download (source
tarball and FC6 RPMs) at:
http://sysex.net/phasex/
PHASEX is an experimental softsynth for Linux/ALSA/JACK systems with a
good mix of standard and experimental features. Here's a quick
overview of what PHASEX offers:
* GTK GUI: Every paramater is available through the GUI, with parameter
names right-clickable for on-the-fly MIDI controller mapping and
middle-clickable for parameter help.
* 4 Osc / 4 LFO: Oscs and LFOs support multiple sources: MIDI key, tempo,
envelopes, and inputs, all with selectable unipolar/bipolar scaling.
Wavetable includes the basic wave shapes, both bandlimited and
non-bandlimited. Per-osc and per-LFO transpose, pitchbend, and init
phase.
* Modulations: Full AM, FM, and PM (in this case, modulation of phase
offset between left and right channels) routing with per-osc controls.
Each osc can be modulated by any osc or LFO for AM, FM, of PM. Wave
select modulation by LFO modulators is alsa available.
* Filter: Modified Chamberlin filter with LP, HP, BP, BS, LP+BP, HP+BP,
LP+HP, and BS+BP modes, distortion and retro (clean) types, keyfollow
modes, ADSR envelope, and LFO cutoff modulation.
* ADSR Envelope: Standard ADSR envelopes for amplifier and filter.
* Chorus: Stereo crossover chorus with builtin phaser.
* Delay: Stereo crossover delay with LFO modulation capability.
* Key Modes: Mono smooth, mono retrigger, mono multikey (round-robin
mapping of MIDI keys to individual oscs), and full poly modes are
available.
* Input Processing: Inputs may be routed to any combination of oscs and
LFOs. Input boost allows weaker sources to be brought up to level of

That's a fine synth! Those shimmering bright chorused analog pad patches gave me a
huge 80's flashback. Reminded me of the old Jupiters, Juno's, and Oberheims.
That sound seems to be hugely hip these days, so it's great to have this in the
toolkit.
Again, nice work, and especially thanks for GPL'ing it.

Quite a beast! Very promising.
Hmm, I miss adjustable velocity influence at least for cutoff, but
better everything. Same for aftertouch.
The middle and right-click on labels is an interesting idea and the
explanation texts are very nice. A highlighting effect on mouse-over could
give a hint that the labels are clickable. Oh, and you could have used
left-click. A statusbar could show as much as possible of the texts and
point to middle-clicking to see more. The MIDI binding could also be shown
in a statusbar.
"Memroy Mode"? ;)
I think I understand what you want to achieve with the patch handling,
but those 3 modes are just scary. I would like to have a patch browser.
If there are changes to a patch and the user switches to another one,
you could always create a "buffer" and list it as child of the original
patch. Then there should be options to save the buffer over the original,
or to save it as new patch.
I like to keep my patches in project folders (everything belonging
to a project in one folder). Makes backup and restore easier. So I
can save a patch anywhere, but how does the patch bar at the bottom
of the window behave, then?

The Patch menu items really belong into File.
Multiple instances in one would be helpfull if you want to do a full
arrangement. Would be like running several instances, except that
they're accessible via one window and appear as one module with
several i/o pots to the outside world.
You could use a single checkbox in those cases where you have
Off/On radio buttons.
I recently saw a Korg mixer that uses red and blue lighted circles
around its knobs to indicate wether they're bound to MIDI or not.

build it on FC2, but am getting a problem with "make".
What are the build requirements for Phasex? I don't want to waste a lot of
time trying to get it to build on FC2, if it's not possible.
The only "no's" I got when running configure were for "floor",
"pow", and
"sqrt". And the last line was "Optimised for arch: none".
Ssh'ing into the machine that I've tried to build it on, and running
"make"
again, just prints out the problems which lead up to make giving up. See
below.

Looks nice and does work. However, with a 2.6.20-rt8 kernel, fiddling with the
default patch gave me clean sounds. All of the presets sounded grundgy and I
think the many of them should not. Simple Organ should be clean. Is there a
problem with the complexity of the patches that might be working the system
too much? Would "undersampling" help here? I will try it with a normal kernel
and see if it is better.
My system is a 575mhz PIII and will not be successful with multiprocess
streams such as playing through jamin and such.

You need at least Gtk 2.8 for some of those calls.

Well that seems to have put an end to installing on FC2. I went to the GTK
site, and it seems to need Glib upgrading as well, and I'm definately not
going into that bundle of fun. FC2 is running glib-1.2.10-12.1.1, and the GTK
site says that glib is currently 2.12.
Never mind. I'll try it on FC5, Debian Etch, and FC6.

Looks nice and does work. However, with a 2.6.20-rt8

think the many of them should not. Simple Organ should be clean. Is there a
problem with the complexity of the patches that might be working the system
too much? Would "undersampling" help here? I will try it with a normal kernel

Tried it with a musix 2.6.21-rt kernel (I compiled it). A lot of xruns around
but it does sound better.
My system is a 575mhz PIII and will not be successful with multiprocess
streams such as playing through jamin and such.

I'm having problems getting this to install, and run. Fc2 doesn'r have the
reqired version og GTK. It installs ok on FC5, but when trying to run it the
mouse, and keyboard lock up, and I have to do a hard reset. I install the rpm
on FC6 on the same machine. I didn't have music stuff installed, so install
jack-audio-connection-kit, and qjackctl. Jack for some reason won't even
start, so have no way to see if your synth works.
If someone is viewing this post, perhaps they could let me know on which linux
distro they have got this synth to work.
I've already been through all this sort of crap with Om. It needed all the
latest & greatest libraries to get it to install, and in the end I gave up on
it.
If Phasex is going the same way, as good as it looks, I think I will pass on
it. It's too much hassle to install and run it.
I would like to try this synth, as the the only synth we have at present is
ZynAddSubFx, putting aside the modular ones.

I sympathise, but Phasex doesn't use as many libraries as Om, and
most "contemporary" systems do have the things it needs -- even Debian stable
does, since Etch was released. I think GTK 2.8 is your only serious
obstacle, and that's not all that new any more now.
For me it works nicely with jackd. With jackdmp, it hangs on startup.

This is built with -O0 -g3, so that's all I can offer (the hang happened with
the default build as well of course). Looks like a race condition. This is
a dual core machine, so jackd and jackdmp are highly likely to differ in
their callback timing.
Very nice synth, though. Good to see a fair old set of patches included, too.

I havn't tried it on the machine that I have got Etch on, as I was watching TV
on it. I'll give it a go tomorrow. It would be nice to get it working, as we
only have ZynAddSubFx at the moment, and another synth with all the knobs,
and sliders is very welcome.

distros that these apps will run on.

Sadly that "low latency" kernel is simply the standard stock ubuntu kernel
with the kernel timer frequency set to 1000Hz (instead of the styandard 200).
So this doesn't help latency at all, at most it helps with MIDI jitter.

Anyway. I've got to play Phasex, but only by ssh'ing from FC2 into the other
machine which has Phasex installed on Debian Etch, and FC5.
If I run it on the machine it's installed on it segfaults, but if I run it via
ssh from FC2, it works just fine. A bit weird, but at least I can use it.

Well, the Smack patches will propably live on converted once Ingen
loads Om patches.

No. Debian. Testing I think. I think it's perfectly fine for a project
in intense development to use the latest and greatest. Not much point in
using yesterdays libs. Takes time until a release hits the distributions,
anyway.
It was always a piece of cake to meat the dependencies on Gentoo (there were
enough other issues showing up over time, but each was solved, many thanks to
the stressed patience of Dave).
By far the most reports of problems with building stuff I see are from Fedora
users.

Had a quick look at this. Nice and compact. Compiled with no problems
on 64studio (AMD64)
Seems interesting, but nowhere near as easy to use as my favourite
ZynAddSubFX!
It will take quite a long time for me to get to learn how to use it
properly.

Very nice. It can be hard to get an edgy electronic sound that doesn't
set your teeth on edge.
One problem I have though is that it totally locks up my system when

* Filter: Modified Chamberlin filter with LP, HP, BP, BS, LP+BP, HP+BP,
LP+HP, and BS+BP modes, distortion and retro (clean) types, keyfollow
modes, ADSR envelope, and LFO cutoff modulation.
* ADSR Envelope: Standard ADSR envelopes for amplifier and filter.
* Chorus: Stereo crossover chorus with builtin phaser.
* Delay: Stereo crossover delay with LFO modulation capability.
* Key Modes: Mono smooth, mono retrigger, mono multikey (round-robin
mapping of MIDI keys to individual oscs), and full poly modes are
available.
* Input Processing: Inputs may be routed to any combination of oscs and
LFOs. Input boost allows weaker sources to be brought up to level of
oscs. Envelope follower applies input envelope to output.
* Sampling Modes: Supports undersampling and oversampling, giving control
over the ever present quality vs. CPU tradeoff.
Since this is the first public release of PHASEX with a GUI, feedback is
highly encouraged. The project goal is to provide a synthesizer to
experimental and professional musicians alike that is as easy and
enjoyable to use as it is powerful. The next batch of new parameters and
features will be a result of feedback from the community, so please, don't
be shy.
