The C* Audio Plugin Suite reincarnates as version 0.4.0.
CAPS is a collection of LADSPA plugins enjoying worldwide favour for
its instrument amplifier emulation. In addition, it provides a
sizeable assortment of acclaimed audio DSP units, sound generators and
effects. CAPS is distributed as open source under the terms of the
GNU Public License.

This release sees the addition of the fine work of David Yeh at CCRMA
on the emulation of classic tube amplifier tone stack circuits (more
here: http://ccrma.stanford.edu/~dtyeh/tonestack/ ).
Three new plugins are building on the tone stack: ToneStack and
ToneStackLT offer isolated implementations, while the new AmpVTS unit
combines a refined AmpV and a ToneStack circuit. I'm very grateful to
David for his brilliant contribution, and I'm quite positive that
those who actively use the CAPS Amps will share this sentiment.
Also primarily aimed at the discerning guitarist is the new AutoWah
plugin, offering a versatile rendition of this classic audio effect.
The last new plugin is Eq2x2, a two-channel 10-band graphic equalizer
modeled after an analogue design.

Better compile using G++-4.0. 4.1 fails with an internal compiler error
compiling ToneStack.cc. I filed a bug for the debian G++-4.1 as instructed.
G++-4.0 compiles fine.

Just edit the makefile and swap "-O3" with "-O2" in the OPTS section.
The FSF doesnt seem to be kidding when they say -O2 is the only tested
optimisation level for GCC. Released software should be compiled with
"-O2" IMHO.

G++-4.0 compiles fine.

That's not a real error, make tries to remove a previous alternative
version of CAPS but since you never had it installed it's no problem.
'make' is just getting a bit chatty here, telling you it ignores what
it is instructed to ignore.

OK, that's expected. You have to 'make clean' after every change to
the compiler flags.

I sent a bugreport to tim's address with some attachements, but i didn't
know about having to change the -O value in Makefile - line #4.
So I figured out how to do that and then it worked.
first I did
$ make clean
then
$ make
i got this :

g++ -O0 -ffast-math -funroll-loops -Wall -fPIC -DPIC -msse -mfpmath=sse

oops, i didn't run ./configure.py before running make, which would explain
things because when i went back and did so, it then produced the error:

Can't get it to compile on x86_64 (running SuSE 9.3 which is old). I get the
following error:

Have you also updated line 54 in interface.cc, reading
#define N 38
That's the total number of plugins, so if you remove 2 of them, it
should read 36 instead. CAPS does an assert() to make sure the number
is right (because if it's not things can get quite nasty, and I often
forget to update it when adding plugins).
But instead of all this, you can apply this patch:

(with patch -p1 in the CAPS directory.)
I just ran a compile test on an AMD 64 with debian's g++ 3.3.5, and it
failed with the same error you reported. With the patch applied, it
builds and loads fine -- and you don't lose the Eq plugins.

Hmm. It did indeed build fine, and the plugins are all available. I'm seeing
an oddness with the AmpVTS interface in Ardour however:
The "model" selector is numeric 0 to 5, which is what I expected, but the gain
control is a dropdown-list showing the names of the models. Anything above
"'64 Princeton" is unusable because of oversaturation.
I also checked the "ToneStack" plugin in ardour, and that provides a text
representation of the model, which is I guess what should happen in AmpVTS
Jack-Rack displays the AmpVTS controls as expected - gain is a slider going
from 0 to 3, so the problem is specific to ardour.
Any suggestions?

Indeed, all serious problems with hosting the plugins in Ardour should
be fixed with 0.4.0, and that goes for all of CAPS.

Beyond the new plugins, this release also brings tons of major
improvements "under the hood". All plugins have been hardened to work
glitch-free in the face of invalid control input. Much effort has
also been spent on further elimination of denormal numbers everywhere.
Parameter smoothing (which is performed in order to prevent zipper
noise) has been refined never to occur at the start of processing.
The build process can now be configured to take advantage of the SSE
and SSE3 extensions on the i686 platform, providing slight performance
gains and automatic denormal protection. The HTML documentation has
