Does anyone know of a linux based synth that emulates the sound of the C64
SID chip? I would love to use that sound in some pieces, but I have never
been able to find anything very usable.
Perhaps something could be used from the libsid/libsidplay libraries??

I don't know any linux softwre fore this emulation but I know a VST
freeware. should work on linux.

Funny, I was thinking about this yesterday. It shouldn't be hard to do.
What might be harder is to have some kind of sensible control system - part of the charm
of the SID chip music is the way it is programmed.
For instance, a lot of the sounds are quite "glitchy" because the sound chip is
only updated every 20ms (on VBI).
Maybe you could code up a DSSI interface to a Commodore 64 emulator? ;-)

I found getting sound out of the Yamaha based synths tricky,
although I worked it out eventually (need to scroll down with bar
on right hand side) but I can alter the sound fine on the SID
synth..
Do banks/new/MOS6581

click osc1: change triangle to triangle+saw. You should see the
waveform underneath change, and the sound will change too..
It's pretty close to a C64.. I would really like to see a resid
based synth, but this is the next best thing!
It would be nice if someone would pick up legasynth for further
development too.. it seems like it has a lot of potential..
(although I guess Hexter is probably better for DX emulation
now).

Sidplay2 uses ReSID for sound emulation. There are two other programs I
know of that use this library:
* Goattracker (http://cadaver.homeftp.net) but you have to be familiar
with a tracker interface and some SID internals
* VICE C64 emulator (http://www.viceteam.org)
Try Paul Slocum's Cynthcart (http://qotile.net/cynthcart.html) or the
good old JCH editor (http://chordian.dk/files.htm?c64) with its cool
polyplay mode for realtime play on the computer keyboard.
Another option is Legasynth
(http://www.reduz.com.ar/cheesetronic/index.php?section=4), but I don't
think this sounds very close to a real SID.
Thanks for these suggestions.. They all sound quite sensible. I
will look into them all.. sound like nice ways to generate good
samples.
Legasynth is closer to what I was envisaging though.. Although I
have never managed to build it successfully.. I keep going back
to it thinking "I've been using Linux for 6/7/8/9.. years now.. I
_must_ be able to get it to work now" but with no success..

the vice emulator must be doing sth. like this. http://www.viceteam.org/
the SID is pretty simple. it had 3 kinds of oscillators + noise
generator; ADSR ; a simple hi/low pass filters and a ring modulation. -
if you're just interested in the "sounds" not compositions, you should
be fine with any synth ;) eg. zynaddsubfx
some more advanced C64 tunes made use of shaping the master-volume, and
other tricks...
depending on where you want to go... use xmms' sid-plugin or vice's x64
to generate/play some sounds.. -> jack -> record. -> edit
(vice is using OSS -> you'd need the fusd kernel module to get it jacked.)
