This may have come up before in a recent thread, but are there any apps
that are good for doing file management across a large number of samples
in many subdirectories? Something like GQview for audio -- the ability
to cursor or browse over a folder structure and audition, rename,
move/copy, and most importantly delete, all through the program's UI
would be nice. All of this becomes really essential as the size of the
collection becomes large and unmanageable.
I think someone in the earlier thread on this mentioned Rezound, but I
don't think it has much in the way of integrated file management.

Rhythmbox includes a "put in basket" right clic function, and copy too.
You can rename the file in its GUI via properties, but that doesn't
change the name on disk. Maybe not what you look for ?

Yeah, SampleCat does look like what I'm looking for. I did think about
Midnight Commander, but what I didn't like about that was that it
doesn't actually understand the content itself. I'd like something
truly like GQview, but for audio -- it knows what it's browsing, and it
gives you options to internally audition and manage on disk. Samplecat
seems to do that, including even the ability to keep track of stuff on
removable media that's not mounted.
What launched all of this is my growing archive of drum machine samples
from various vintage beatboxes. It's getting to the point where even I
don't know what I've got anymore, and I'm pretty sure a lot of it's
useless and could be deleted.

Evolution will preview audio files by default if you hover the mouse
pointer over them... but oddly enough, only in the "icon view" mode, which
I find less convenient than GQview's linear list. As a file manager, it
naturally has rename/move/copy/delete functions, but in icon view it's not
that easy to view a whole folder structure at once.
There's definitely a gap that could be filled there.

Maybe samplecat can do what you want, but I never got it to run on my
machine so I can't tell for sure. Would be handy if it worked though.
