Hi all,
I have about a five and a half hour long concert I would like to burn as
audio on a DVD. I assumed that cdrdao or cdrecord would simply make an
"audio dvd" from the wav files, but that is not the case! My guess is
that there is something in the CDDA spec which prevents making an audio
CD over a certain length, because I get "illegal time code" errors from
cdrdao.
So, three questions:
1) Is there a way to master an "audio dvd" without encoding to a closed
DVD-A format? By this I mean a DVD disc with uncompressed audio which
can be played back by most CD/DVD combo players.
2) Failing this, I would be happy to simply burn a data DVD with the
tracks, but I want to make sure there are no gaps during playback
between the tracks [thus my idea to make a DAO "audio dvd"]. There are 7
tracks, each approx 50 min long, and each track continues directly into
the next. I do not have access to the original, continuous recording.
How could I get ecasound [or similar command line app] to append the
files together into one single, seamless file? Using a GUI app like
Rezound for this is just too cumbersome!
3) I am not sure if have a single 4 Gb wav file would cause playback
problems on a reasonably fast computer with a DVD drive. My intuition
says yes, however. What other options for seamless playback of almost 6
hours of sound do I have?

Yeah, you need to do things a bit differently for DVD than for CDs. You
may need to look into using DVD authoring software, like dvdauthor (and
the various GUIs like DVD Styler, Polidori, etc). I don't know what
facilities it has for audio only, however. Tools like growisofs can be
used for burning DVDs, among others, once you have the DVD files built
(or an ISO image to burn to disk). Also, DVD audio is usually sampled
at 48 kHz rather than 44.1 kHz like CDs are.

If DVD audio is anything like mastering audio CDs then you may need to
make sure it's tracked on sector boundaries. If the cuts do not overlap
this becomes much easier.

Well if they are raw PCM:
cat t1.wav t2.wav t3.wav ... tN.wav > wholething.wav
Obviously this is easier if they do not overlap.

broken. This should be as easy as "File -> Open Append" and select all
the files. Even easier than catting them all together.

Should work. Opening a 4GB file should not be harder than opening a 4MB
file. The whole thing does not have to fit in memory at once.

this "open append" feature in either Rezound or Audacity. Espc Rezound
is clumsy for this, because it has to visually render all the peaks.
Each 50 min chunk warns it will take 4 minutes to load this way!
Since "cat" won't work for files with WAV headers, is there a command
line app to append WAV files to each other? What would the ecasound
syntax be, for example?

I can't see this "open append" feature in either Rezound or Audacity.
Espc Rezound
is clumsy for this, because it has to visually render all the peaks.
Each 50 min chunk warns it will take 4 minutes to load this way!
Yeah, CE does that too. But you can lower the quality so it's faster
IIRC. And it caches the peaks so next time the file opens instantly.
Anyway, sorry I couldn't help much...

Cool Edit Pro, CDWAV... pretty much every Windows .wav editor I have
ever seen. The sound editor that came with Mac OS 9 could do this I
think. It might not be exactly "Open append" but with most of the .wav
editors I have used you open one file, then when you go to open another
one it will let you choose whether to append it or open in a new window.
Is there really no Linux app with this simple feature?

Ecasound will append also, an example exists on the official ecasound
examples page:

The relevant section says:

Here's a simple example where first 60 seconds of bigfile.wav is
written to part1.wav and the rest to part2.wav. If you want to combine
these files back to one big file:
3. ecasound -i part2.wav -o part1.wav -y:500
part2.wav is appended to part1.wav."

The "-y:" flag is the offset of the next "track" in seconds. A chain
of these should get you what you want.

Hi;
Well, you could make a simple ordinary dvd video that (with luck)
would play in a stand alone unit, or in your computer. Something like:
(this is for NTSC, framerate different, the image size would be
different for PAL, and at least the '-n n' option should be '-n p'
in mpeg2enc)
Get a 720x480 jpeg image.
Turn image into couple second mpeg video:
# jpeg2yuv -n 100 -I p -f 29.97 -j my-pic.jpg | mpeg2enc -f8 -n n -o my-mpeg.m2v
Turn your giant audio blob into *raw* PCM 48000 sample rate, 2
channel, 16 bit, and apparantly *big endian*. (not a wav.) Name
it 'something.lpcm' The extention matters. An editor like
rezound, or sox, or ecasound can do this. (youll know if the
endian-ness wasnt right, it will sound like loud static)
Mux them together:
# mplex -f8 -L 48000:2:16 -o my-vid.mpg my-mpeg.m2v something.lpcm
(you can play the mpg at this point, but the player might stop after
the short video runs out...but, the sound should be there and a dvd player
should keep going.)
Make the dvd image:
(This is the dead simplest example; you can get much more fancy,
but Im not going into that now.)
# mkdir dvd
# dvdauthor -o dvd my-vid.mpg
# dvdauthor -T -o dvd
Test it:
xine dvd:/full/path/to/wherever/dvd/
(and I mean full path, and dont forget the trailing slash)
Burn it:
growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/dvd -dvd-video dvd/
