  I did some quick tests using hdparm against a combo
 firewire/usb external drive a few weeks ago.  USB2
 came in at 20.77 MB/sec while plain old firewire
 posted 20.43 MB/sec.  I suspect the drive itself and
 it's interface with the external wire is the
 limiting factor. 
Do you notice USB2 stalling while doing things like
rsync?

USB1 stalls like crazy while USB2 is better but does
stall. On my system USB HHDs just aren't usable.
That's the reason I want to switch to firewire.

If we can work directly from the firewire disks then
all the better.
