the TEXTURE midi sequencer. yep... DOS and an MPU-401, running on an XT clone, around
1984.
one time recently we were at my dad's place, and he still had an old DOS machine up
and running. my son took one look at the screen and immediately pronounced it just about
the coolest thing he had ever seen.

rewind button, one had to play everything in a single take ;-)

Don't know if that "hooked me" into anything but the first
serious music software I used was a software drum machine I
wrote on the Oric.
Sound generation method was one channel of square wave
oscillator and one channel of noise from the built-in AY-8912.
A sound consisted of an array of (square freq, square vol, noise
freq, noise vol) tuples. Every 10 ms, the next tuple was poked
into the 8912's registers.
The Oric also had a relay to switch the cassette recorder in and
out of pause mode. The program could open and close the relay at
specified times, which I used to trigger an MS-20.
BTW: Does anyone remember the famous SPEAKTEX.TOS
program used
in so many music productions? Would love to have something like
it running on linux...

First music making computer was a home built PC running Planet CCRMA
package. Yes, I was late to the show....

My high school physics teacher had a ZX80, which I thought was the
shiznit. I was going to get one, but by the time Xmas was rolling
around, they had the ZX81 out. I also had a programmable calculator
that was made by Sinclair, and was marketed here in the US by Radio
Shack. Fun stuff.
I still have them both, haven't fired either of them up in years, though.

I was in love with my 2068. So much so, that I could
actually touch-type basic programs on it! There were
three or for shift modes for each key, each combination
representing a BASIC keyword.
I wrote an assembler in basic for this thing. I actually
used the BASIC editor to write the assembly, and then
used PEEK to get at the text of the buffer and generate
the machine code.
I was pretty starved for resources and information.
Later, I had a Yamaha CX5M computer. I found a Commodore
64 with a printer at the thrift store. I used the cassette
motor relay in the back of the CX5M to switch on and off the
joystick button pin on the Commodore to tap out a print job
in a sort of home made Morse code. Hey, it worked.

Same for me, NoteWorthy Composer really got me into composing. And it was the last app
which I needed with Wine in Linuxaudio.
Now I have Denemo...
I've done a few things with Logic5 but these were only extended tests with no
release.

Nice topic! My first compy was a C64, and though I was interested in
writing music, I couldn't do anything with Music Construction Set due
to my complete lack of musical training. The program which hooked me
was Instant Music on the Amiga, which showed the user all the scales
and modes and had varying degrees of restrictiveness when entering
notes (rhythm guides, melody guides). What a great program for
learning how to write music; I wish something was like that now.

In the 70s, somehow I got a hold of a Xerox Parc published paper on
creating music manuscripts with the Alto. I think I called them and
they sent me a copy of the (bounded) paper. I'd have to dig into my
archives to see what exactly it said and the computer it used. The
document had a blue cover and a picture of a musical keyboard on the
front - if anyone has ever seen it.
Then, while a music student at Indiana University (still in the
mid-70s), I heard about Don Byrd's [1] music printing machine at the
(now) Informatics department. I visited Don and he was happy to show
me a rather large computer and how it worked. I was impressed, not
knowing anything about computers. Unfortunately, Xenakis left before I
attended I.U.
I wasn't able to afford any of that hardware -- of course -- and so my
first computer was an Atari 800.

DEC PDP/8. First computer that I made music with was a Texas
Instrument model, much like the Vic-20. I supposed I also
programmed assembly code into an Intel 8085 development station
to play the theme from "Close Encounters...". The first computer
I did any serious music with was a Pentium I running Redhat 4.0.

SoX was the first music program that got me really excited. That
was very long ago, sometime in the mid to late 1980s. SoX was also
the back-end part of my first serious music adventure, which used
SoundStudio as its front-end. I mastered an entire CD using that
combination back in 1999.
It was soooo much easier to work with Ardour last night on my
dual-core Athlon. :-)

SP Gold is still in hard use here, running under a DOS emulator on

ZX Spectrum and RAM Music Machine - simple 8-bit sampler and MIDI
interface borrowed from a mate at school. I ended up writing custom DSP
code in assembler to apply echo, distortion and filtering effects to
incoming audio. This must have been about 20 years ago or more - I was
in 3rd year at high school, so I was probably about 13 or 14.
I also wrote a thing that triggered a couple of envelopes and output
four different squarewaves through a modified printer port on the
Spectrum, allowing me to write beepy tunes and pass the results through
a homemade filter bank and homemade tape echo.
I wish I could find those old tapes. I wonder if I could recreate them?
Probably wouldn't be the same...

Dr.T's KCS (Keyboard Controlled Sequencer, I think). Using that with
the Amiga, my Casio CZ-101 (I miss that synth), and a VestaFire 4-track
cassette deck was a lot of fun.
I later got an audio digitizer that connected to the serial port and
allowed me to do rudimentary audio editing. I was doing a fair amount
of production work for radio back then, and the first time I edited a
promo on the Amiga, I retired the grease pencil and razor blade. I don't
remember what the program was that I did the editing in, though.

My first computer, well the first I learned to use was the first desktop,
actually the whole desk .... IBM 1620. Had a fortran compiler that was
useless. Programmed in assembler, had it translating Spanish. 1963.
I worked on mainframes off and on.
FIrst I owned, a PII, later replaced with a PIII found in the trash after
everyone already had PIVs.
First sound software?Jammer and Cakewalk Express. Later graduated to Home
Studio 2002. Stuck with that in Win98. Jammer, CW Express run fine in stock
wine, Home studio might eventually work in codeweaver's version?

I'll have to echo this experience. My first (I certainly didn't own it) was an
IBM 1620 that my high school had to compute the students' schedules every day,
as they changed from day to day. Our geometry teach knew fortran, and taught a
few of us various programming languages, and we took over the machine over the
weekend for a number of months. Then we were invited not continued to use the
district's supercomputer, and our teacher got us in at the Long Beach State
computer center during some evenings. Really cool. It was there that we heard
the radio interference generated by the computer play little songs on the radio
that the admins had sitting around. That was Really Really Cool, and I was
pretty much hooked.

The first I owned was the very original IBM PC. 10MB hard drive, 1MB
DRAM. $3000 IIRC. Got a Hercules video card pretty quickly. I used
some Unisys/Univac machines when I was in college but I don't consider
them mine.
Starting with Turbo Pascal I wrote a librarian for my DX7. Sold the
code to some company I cannot remember - nice people though - for
about $500 + royalties. They renamed the program to DXConnect as an
inside joke on my name. Over time I think I made maybe $1000 tops
total for the project, but more importantly discovered that I'm not a
programmer,. ;-) But hey, it was a good start.

In terms of home studio software (I assume that's what you're asking)
that's extremely easy. Sequencer Plus, and later Sequencer Plus Gold.
I found Tran Tracks somewhere in that time frame and used to buy MIDI
tracks from him to play my guitar with when I wasn't playing live.
Amazing that he's still in business selling inexpensive MIDI tracks 32
years later. Somehow it's not all that different today, just that I
have more power on my desktop than the old Tascam/Ampex jingle studio
I worked at in the early 70's had in the whole building .

the earliest music hw/sw that i remember to commit some money was a 8bit
sample-based drum-machine/sound-module attached to the expansion slot of

cheetah something iirc. this was mid-80s.
by that time i was already missing midi computer control, as for my
first synth, a kawai k3, which i still own and love :) just a few years
later, along with the pc democratization and soundblaster bundling, i
got it with cakewalk alright--Linus was still in the closet at the time :)

But along with not remembering the first music software I used, I was really
shocked when I first heard a program on Commodore 64 playing Dire Straits'
Money for Nothing. It was a sample replay and for those years it was really
amazing for me.

Later I baught a Kawai K4r and played around a little with Bars &
Pipes, MED and other software, but never really used the K4r for

Eventually, I gave up on "native" sound, moved to "IBM" PC, got a
SoundBlaster AWE32 and eventually a Roland JV-1080. At that time, I
used various versions of Cakewalk.

first "contact" was a triumph-adler (german manufacturer of typewriters,
sewing machines, and, incidentally, computers) machine running cp/m on a
zilog z80, at the primary school where my father worked.
first machine i really knew how to use (still not my own, but my
father's) was an 8086 with 640k ram at 8 mhz (or 4.77 when i was
annihilating my father's tetris record - he never found out how to
underclock the thing :-D)
first audio machine i used many years later (1998, i think) was an sgi
indy running irix, with snd on it.
first machine i actually owned was a dual p2/350mhz with 256m ram and a
4g scsi drive (yay!). i upped it over the years to a dual 800 p3 with 1
gig ram and phased it out after seven years.

snd and its ability to display fft graphs. what a great learning tool.

It is quite a funny thread and makes interesting reading.
First computer was the parents ZX81, programming games for my then 5 year old brother in
Basic. A whole 1K of memory. Later had a Spectrum - these were the only reasonably priced
systems available then. Did not program any musical stuff at the time.
First music system was using a VAX 11/70 running Unix 2.2 using C to generate downloadable
wavetables to a hardware synth as an undergraduate project. The synth was 8bit 64kHz
however each voice only ran at 8kHz due to the intersampling AD converters running 8
voices.
My first own system was an Amiga 500 eventually with 500K of RAM and a 20M disk using
68000 assembler code to write my own MIDI software over a homegrown MIDI adaptor from an
Akai master keyboard to different sound modules.
Then along came Linux with the 0.99 kernels so bought a P3-133 system.
Have only ever really used my own audio programes so the closest I get to the last
question would be a C compiler.

As far as making music with computers: I made more
music using Dr. T's Keyboard Controlled Sequencer
(KCS) on that Apple, than I have on all the subsequent
sequencers I've used combined. I still miss KCS....
What really got me hooked, though, was writing my
own music software. I wrote drivers in GraForth
for the MIDI interface. Pretty soon I'd written a
DX7 patch editor, and some weird algorithmic
composition software, and it's all been downhill
since.

1st
Atari when I was 8.
We had no spare floppies so we had to leave it on for three days while
we typed in the code for the game we wanted to play. Of course it didn't
work when we finished so we gleefully pulled the plug and went out side
to play instead.
Musically was an apple se40 where I got hooked on the synthetic noises
for DnD and shufflepuck.
Now I don't play games ever. Trying to figure out how to stop my son
from becoming an addict too. Maybe get him one of the olpc's.
It's amazing that for him video phones and HD monitors are just a normal
part of everyday life.
