Greetings,
I'm working on an article that profiles the loopers and arpeggiators
available for Linux. I'm currently having too much fun with
SooperLooper, driving it with an external sequencer. Very cool stuff,
but I'd like to test it with a MIDI control board, so:
If anyone here is using SooperLooper or Freewheeling or Kluppe with a
MIDI foot controller (or any MIDI controller), please let me know what
hardware you're using. I'm thinking about purchasing a device, I'd like
to know what's recommended by LAU's lusty live loopers. :)
Really, SooperLooper is just too cool. I'll have to make an effort to
try anything else.

I've just bought one, so I'm really scratching the surface now. It's a
(used) Proel MS-16, 16 pedals basically sending MIDI program changes. It
works really well and seems built like a tank. Paid 80 eur.
I heard good things of the behringer FCB1010 but I never tried one. On
the good side is the absence of a power adapter, you plug just the power
cable into it. And it also has two pedals that send continuous
controllers. It's a bit more expensive (around 170 eur new, 100/120 used)
Really, SooperLooper is just too cool. I'll have
to make an effort to
try anything else.
Agreed, sooperlooper is fantastic :)

its awesome. probably the best product Behringer ever made. i have
absolutely no complaints about mine. its just ... great. and its also
what jesse was using as he worked on the SL MIDI control system, which
helps a very tiny bit.
the power cable situation does have one downside for users who travel
between 110 and 240V countries ... way too easy to just grab an IEC
power cable from your hosts, and plug the FCB1010 in .... and fry the
whole thing. and yes, i did this in rotterdam several years ago :(

The FCB1010's two pedals don't allways send continuous controllers.
If the pedals haven't moved for more than 0.5s, there is a gap of about
10 steps before controllers are sent again.
Anybody has a patched firmware to get rid of this gap?
(Allready checked the UNO firmware, doesn't cut the gap)

I use sooperlooper with a Behringer FCB-1010. Like the
other guys, I'm really happy with it.
My typical live SL setup is two stereo loops with the dry
signal passing through clean. I control it like this:
* Expression pedal A: Loop 1 wet gain
* Expression pedal B: Loop 2 wet gain
* Pedals 1-5: Record, Overdub, Trigger,
Undo, and Mute the "current" loop.
* Pedal 6: select next loop.
* Pedal 7: Mute all loops / Panic.
All messages are sent using CC's (whether it needs a CC or
not). Note that ALL of the pedals have to be configured so
that expression pedals A and B do this.
There is Java-based editor for the FCB-1010, but it only
supports a customized firmware called "UNO". It is in many
ways superior to the Behringer firmware... and well-worth
the $14. However, I've been using the older, buggier,
factory firmware (v1.0) and it works just fine for me.

Hmm, I normally like to keep things as standard as possible, but this

I've used both the Korg NanoKontrol and the NanoPad
with SooperLooper on
stage. The NanoPad for triggering specific loops - I had the top row
pads for "Trigger" and the bottom row pads for "Loop" mode. The
NanoKontrol as a mixer, with gain of each loop assigned to a fader.
Also, I had the Kontrol's buttons assigned to mute individual loops. I
had the transport section of the Kontrol assigned globally, i.e. across
all loops.
The assignments took a few seconds, with the nice "midi-learn"
functionality (big thumbs-up to Jesse!).
Just a few of the gazillion possibilities with these two and SL. Big fan
of both the hardware and SL. Hope this helps...!

Many thanks for the reponses to my original question.
It looks like the Behringer is the controller to order. I can get a good
deal from eBay, I think I'll order it today unless someone comes up with
a compelling reason to wait.
I'm eager to test it with SooperLooper. Driving SL with the sequencer is
great fun, but the board looks like the Right Stuff for the program's
best operation.
