Hello!
I've already posted this topic to the official Gentoo forums, but nobody
was able to help me.
I've successfully run my Maya 44 USB together with the snd-usb-audio
module for more than a year. But after the last update of ALSA some
strange things are going on. "Alsaconf" doesn't find the USB soundcard
although snd-usb-audio is loaded. mpg123 gives the following error:

AFAIR alsaconf is not able to configure USB cards at all.

Now I just need a solution that the MAYA44 stays number 0. I usually
unplug and replug the devices to use them on other systems.

For the case above, Maya44 is "default:USB", other device is
"default:M2x2".
(Probably the USB audio driver should use a better short name, and of
course this should be documented somewhere)

...and it should be i18n'ed...
I doubt it is possible to do it automatically. At least an app needs to
ask the user. When running GarageBand (am I going to be crucified
now?!? :) and I remove the USB card, I get asked if I want to use the
onboard soundcard instead.
I think it's just fine that ALSA numbers the cards. It's up to the GUI
programs to prompt the user with "human readable" names.
BTW: I once told Paul that JACK would lock my machine when removing the
USB device. The current version doesn't do so, instead JACK properly
quits. That's a huge improvement, guys!

Well, I just rolled 2.6.18-rt7 (was on 2.6.15) and the device numbers
are completely reshuffled. I would imagine any setup that relies on the
device numbers (and not names) would be totally messed up in situations
such as these.

The first device that's plugged in gets the number you planned. The next
gets the first free number. Unless of course you setup both devices in
your configuration. Then the first plugged device gets the lowest number
the second the highest.

I don't have very good knowledge especially how usb-audio works but when
I look at /proc/asound/cards I see a table and columns, and if I have to
select one and only one the "much cleaner" way to do so is to identify

ease of use (plug/unplug do what ever you want) is maybe not compatible
with someone who want to fixate its app config. User should restrict
himself in the way he uses his usb devices.
You have better knowledge of this so I don't want to contradict but I
can't understand why you consider that name is a good way to identify
device. I have a rdms point of view so it's why when I heard something
like you have to select something by it's label or even part of its
label it sounds very ugly in my ears :).

This is not possible in this case as far as I understood it. It's a
decision from the kernel guys to change device number of practically
everything. It includes stuff like "Midi Through".
I use (or used to use) static device numbers setup via
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, but in my scripting I now totally avoid
devise numbers (for instance when connecting alsa clients). Using names
or program some logic that looks for substrings in names instead, have
proven to be much more robust.

But as I said, something happened in alsa 1.0.11rc1 that moved my
index=0 from 72 to 14 in aconnect.

At some point around 2.6.15 I found that I needed to make
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base a symlink to /etc/modules.d/alsa in order for
this to work (under debian, though)...
