Hi List,
This may be somewhat off topic, but I figure some of you may well know
the answer...
I'm trying to set up an audio server to connect to my home stereo, and
have been looking for an app with the following features: web based
interface for playlisting, and playback through local sound card.
I've found plenty of options which provide streaming, but none which
play through the server's own sound system.
Any pointers would be welcome

Use one of the streaming interfaces you already found (I like Zina,
myself), then just run your web browser on the server and have it remotely
display via X on the machine you're at. Voila!!

should I have to install, configure and maintain a streaming server
and client when I can simply have the machine play the file
directly - less resources used, less to go wrong, less to worry

really really low end machine, think calculator (but if you're already
running web server and audio player it cannot be that low end)
maybe you could just try it and see if it works well enough, I have
an impression that you simpy said "no streaming" and that's it. It might
be better to specify functional requirements (like what you want it to
do, what machine you have available for it etc.) and then try various
solutions and see which one works best. Not saying you _shuld_ use
streaming but no harm trying it and if you find juke box you really like
and it only can do streaming and you get acceptable performance then why
not use that solution?

Two clients playing the same stream are not going to play in sync - only
slightly off but enough to be annoying. The house stereo can pipe music
to every room with no sync issues.

Not quite, I'd prefer not to stream mainly because it's unnecessary in
principle and I personally like things to be lean if possible.

Hence why I asked if there was a system available already to try out -
I've had no luck getting any of the dozen or so I've tried to work, but
that's likely to be a PHP/MySQL issue.

Ultimately, I want to write my own system, so that I get *exactly* what

there's some disconnect here - functionally there is no difference
between local player and the player that uses stream. Regardless of
whether you are using streaming or not you can pipe it to house stereo.

I am not suggesting you add machines to your home and stream it to
those machines. What I was suggesting is to use the streaming just like
you would use the local client. The only difference is that instead of
controlling the player directly (in one way or another, depending on
player) the server only controls what is being streamed and the player
essentially sits there and plays the stream (i.e. you never touch
controls on the player), output goes to the home stereo.
on a modern operating system there is already so much stuff that you
don't neccessarily need that streaming or not streaming does not make
much change (IMO). To get a really minimalistic solution you'd have to
have a DOS box:-)
what is the list? which server are you using? I could try to remember
the testing/evaluations I did and post something useful if I knew what
exactly do you want to do...

Slightly misunderstanding, I think - I want to be able to listen to the
music in any room in the house. The stereo already does this, so it
makes sense to use it. I could stream to the living room, kitchen,
study.... all of which have machines in them, but hearing music out of
sync from another room would be somewhat annoying to say the least.
I am not suggesting you add machines to your home and stream it to
those machines. What I was suggesting is to use the streaming just
like you would use the local client. The only difference is that
instead of controlling the player directly (in one way or another,
depending on player) the server only controls what is being streamed
and the player essentially sits there and plays the stream (i.e. you
never touch controls on the player), output goes to the home stereo.
At the moment, the livingroom machine is plugged into the stereo for
this - and the files are accessed through NFS temporarily - but a 3m
jack to phono lead is not ideal running around the room... I intend to
put the server into the same cupboard as the stereo.

Well, I'll be rolling my own system as soon as I have a clear idea what
it requires so it will be lean in the sense of no unnecessary kernel
stuff and no unnecessary user or system tools.

None at the moment, haven't yet managed to get PHP ang MySQL to
interoperate, but only been trying that for a day... Have looked at the
ones suggested here, plus tunez, tuna, NetJuke and rimps. Unfortunately
they all fail with PHP or SQL errors, so I need to get that sorted out
before trying them in earnest...

just did that few days ago, on a debian system it's quite easy, I
just needed to reconfigure the packages after adding apache2 (they were
initially configured for apache-ssl only). I can send you relevant parts
of config files (should be fairly similar for other distros).

ample - looks like it supports playing directly into xmms (which
would be running on the same machine where the ample is running, not on
the machine where you controlling it from. IIRC this was either not
working or too simple/inflexible
gnump3d - this is probably not what you want, seems like only
supports streaming to the machine where you control it from (just like
few other ones like icecast, slimp3 etc.)
Mserv (http://www.mserv.org) - this looks like it could do the job, I
think I tried this one and it worked fairly well (it has API, web
interface and CLI, you can connect to it via telnet, there are some
third party clients listed on their web page). This is definitely the
one to look at (given your setup), don't remember if it was suggested
here...
I don't remember any server doing all the audio manipulation you are
asking for, they are all just interfaces to players (i.e. play, search,
playlist etc.)

I have the same aim as a personal project - I just built the box, now I'm
getting it to work. I think the best bet is gjukebox
(gjukebox.sourceforge.net) which does just this but I haven't been able to

mp3s as well. Another possibility is netjuke, which is setup for streaming
but should be able to do local playback (though it's not obvious what has to
be done to make this work). Netjuke 2 is out real soon now.
There's also oggcarton, which I haven't got to work fully either...
Actually I have issues with all of these so I'm writing my own - project
code-named DoMuSe, registered 2 days ago in planning stage on Sourceforge,
which will use apache/tomcat/jsps for the web playlisting interface,
postgresql for the metadatabase and ecasound/jack for playback and recording,
with synaesthesia handling visualisations. I'd be interested to hear anything
you might have to say about the human interface aspects of these jukebox
designs....

This may be somewhat off topic, but I figure some of you may well know
the answer...
I'm trying to set up an audio server to connect to my home stereo, and
have been looking for an app with the following features: web based
interface for playlisting, and playback through local sound card.
I've found plenty of options which provide streaming, but none which
play through the server's own sound system.
Any pointers would be welcome

getting it to work. I think the best bet is gjukebox
(gjukebox.sourceforge.net) which does just this but I haven't been able to

first you complain there is no local playback and now you say that
all of them assume that playback would be local?
wireless handheld is a computer where you want interface to be
displayed or a remote control of some sort?
if it's a computer than you could simply run some player (like
freeamp or xmms etc.) on server and display it on the wireless handheld
(or use vnc if you don't want the handlheld to be on all the time server
is playing and/or control it from number of locations).
on the other hand, if you want to use a web based jukebox they all
seem to suck (I tried number of them, pretty much all that are in debian
and few others), that was about a year ago though... but at least some
of them do play stream anywhere (e.g. on the server itself, which is
what I think you want) and let you control what is being played via web
interface, some of them with rating system that determines probability
of a song being played (more popular songs are plaeyd more often) etc.
