Hi guys (and gals),
a good friend of mine is in the market for a mixer that is at least
capable of recording a whole band simultaneously.
He thinks that 16 channels might be a minimum for that, but he isn't
exactly experienced, and me neither.
It would be nice if it would work as firewire audio interface as well,
like the mackie onyx mixers, mainly because it might mean less trouble
overall.
Those onyx mixers look nice, and are supported by ffado, but we'd
like to have some more options.
Linux support isn't a strict requirement but it would be really nice to
have as option. So far it didn't work for him, but when the hardware
works with linux I can show him what's there and what's new from time
to time.
In this case he has a budget of up to 3000 Euros or possibly more, but
the stuff really needs to work for a studio.

Hi,
Midas is a great brand and at the high end of mixing consoles. They also
run their latest products on a Linux system.
Mackie is good for the price.
Behringher is cheap but they have a lot of quirks and the sound quality
is not very nice.
If you've got cash to spend and audio quality is your desire then you
can't go wrong with a Midas.

Midas looks a bit too expensive to me, especially since he'd need an
interface as well.
He told me that Behringer is out of question, exception may be a case
where a behringer product actually is good, which is said to be the
case for a few.
So, somewhere in between would be nice ;)

acoustic guitar, one violin, one keyboard; 8 singers; two wireless mics
used by the priests ... we use a 16-channel Firewire device and
sometimes find ourselves wishing we had more channels ...

keyboarder isn't recording the midi, there will be additional 2-6 channels
for keys. And recording the electric guitars clean and through amp/effects
doesn't hurt either. For acoustic guitars it is good to use at least two mics
at different distances (provided that they play in their own acoustic booth,
otherwise you are pretty much fixed on the plugin-signal). And then you said
something about singers...
The good thing about such a setup (for example with an rme-pci-card and three
adat-interfaces, or several ffado-supported firewire interfaces) is that you
get about the same number of outputs. So you can create a lot monitor-mixes
for the musicians headphones.

Check with the vendors first. If they support it in windows, you can do
it with FFADO too.

Oh, I forgot one more device - the computer driving the projection
screen. We also use it to play videos, so its audio output also goes
into the mixer. But I think it doesn't go into the Firewire box - at
least, we never record it.

That's the old school way of doing it. Now you should digitize
immediately. Get a proper sound card with enough inputs and then use a
MIDI controller as your mixer.

That's the old school way of doing it. Now you should digitize
immediately. Get a proper sound card with enough inputs and then use a
MIDI controller as your mixer.
