Hi I've a friend who's planning to record lessons for the language
courses they teach but doesn't know a great deal about computers and
seemingly only has access to very old hardware. I was wondering if
anyone else has experience in using linux audio on win-98/me era
machines, and could point me at a distro or any packages that would be
useful for a (very) low-end recording solution for the beginner.
Recommending new hardware isn't completely out of the question (I think
an external HDD and a CD writer is a bare minimum, and we'll be buying
a mic of course), but I'd rather get them up & running with as little
extra expense as possible.
I've been using Agnula & now 64studio for the last few years but I
mostly work in Csound/Blue and SC, so I have slightly skewed view of the
linux audio world :-/

shoes I'd prefer a simple, rock steady solution. A comsumer mp3 player
with a record-to-mp3 feature + a good microphone (I have a stereo pair
that sounds really good, forgot their name, look like walkman-style
earplugs, cost me arround 150 euro if I remember correctly).
o boot time, no movable parts, no hardware noise, fits in a pocket, no
setup, just a few buttons and potentionally more stable than any
computer-based system.
Audio must however be edited on a seperate system, but any os should do
there for simple cuts and so...

Not really, but I think there's quite a few out there.

It seems though as if some (like

only supports direct encoding to mp3...

I've found the iRiver ifp-795 to be decent quality,
it plays ogg.
Cheap.

I would give dyne:bolic a try here. It's perfect for low-end
hardware. A big plus is that there is no/very little config
necessary, you can just boot and record.
