Greetings,
The config.xml file for AVSynthesis includes a setting for the window size :
width="1280" height="1024" fullscreen="false"
Alas, setting it to anything other than the current screen dimensions
results in a non-start. The program simply reports that the requested
screen size can't be created.
From what I've learned so far, it appears that I need to set modelines
for other screen dimensions. The modelines are *not* the same things as
the Mode settings in the Screen section of xorg.conf, but I'm not clear
on how to find what they should be or how to enter them into xorg.conf.
Btw, I do have various modes set in my Screen section, but that doesn't
seem to matter to AVSynthesis. I'd like to resolve this problem, because
AVS saves its rendered files in the current screen size (1280x1024), and
I'd like to save them in a smaller size.
So once again I turn to the deep minds of LAU for assistance. Any
suggestions ? The cards and monitors in question are:
GeForce 7300GS with Envision EN-910e (JAD)
GeForce 7600GS with Sony Trinitron E200 (64 Studio)

Thanks, Leslie, I appreciate the pointer. I already
discovered the gtf
utility, so I tried setting the modelines in my xorg.conf. Alas, I got
no joy. AVS responds with the same complaint about not being to set the
window resolution. Time to badger the author some more. :)

I remember a time when creating modelines was a requirement to get a
working X config file...
Although, I don't really understand why and how xorg would need
manually set modelines for a modern screen + video card combination
@Dave : which Xorg are you using ? Do you use RandR ? what's your
configuration file like ?
One possible issue you might be having : 1280x1024 is not listed as a
valid resolution (undetected, not listed in your screen's or card's
supported resolutions)
Try xrandr if you work with an randr enabled server. It should give
you a list of what's usable.
Send me a copy (off list) of your xorg.conf and var/log/Xorg.0.log, I
might find what's wrong...

Hi;
Modelines really shouldnt be required unless you have certain
requirements in regard to the timings. A modern Xorg server will
have a billion built-in modes, and it will make all of them available
that are within the constraints of your monitors specs and the available
clock settings of your video card.
So, usually under the Screen section, you specify the resolutions
you personall want under the Modes. Then, these will be available for
you to easily cycle between via ctrl-alt-<plus> and ctrl-alt-<minus>
(+/- on the num-pad). Xorg will have chosen the best refresh for the
resolutions that does not endanger your monitor.
Now, in this case, the virtual size of the desktop will still
be the size of the largest Mode. You may have to leave out a higher
res if this is a problem, or just run another X server on another
console.
The 'xrandr' command can also list all available resolutions
and refresh rates and allow you to force one.

best choice.]

I was going to answer that I've been using gnome as my email ID for
longer than GNOME has been around, but I don't know how long GNOME has
been around ... anyway, my use of gnome predates my use of Linux, and
I've been using Linux for eight years now ...
Actually, I'm not using GNOME - I'm quite happy to login at a text login
prompt and manually startx. I figure if any Windows user tries to start
up and use my laptop, they'll think it's broken and just give up. ;-)

Xorg calculates the screen DPI automatically, so if you switch to a
larger resolution on a display that reports the same physical size
then a 10-point font will still be the same number of millimeters
tall. Look at the "resolution" line in xdpyinfo's output to see what
DPI it's currently running at.
If you want to override the DPI calculation, making a 10-point font
the same number of *pixels* tall regardless of the resolution, then
you can pass an option like "-dpi 96" to the X server (by editing
.xserverrc if you use startx, or /etc/gdm/gdm.conf if you use GDM).
