Hey hey,
my old Rockbox enabled MP3-player just broke and I'm looking for a
replacement. There are some requirements which make it challenging to find a
proper alternative.
I need soomething that will be recognised as a simple mass storage USB device,
i.e. can be mounted on Linux. I need playback by folder structure, i.e.
sorting by folder- and filename. Furthermore some kind of simplistic speech
output would be really helpful, since I can't see. Furthermore bookmarks and a
proper resume function are required.
I used to have a Sandisk Sansa Clip+, which was supported by Rockbox. This
player has been discontinued for years. Some players occasionally come up for
sale, but I suspect that their life span will be rather limited.
What do the joggers or audiobook fans amongst you use?
Sorry for the OT, but here, at least, I can guarantee that the device can be
adminstered from the right OS.

Define "broke". With specific requirements, a repair might be the least
painful path forward.

I've happily been using a fiio device for many years. The one I have
comes with minimal storage out of the box, but has two SD slots, both
showing up as normal storage when plugging in through USB. Models
newer than mine moved from a custom OS to one based on android, and I
remember reading up on it to confirm that it is open enough to install
any apps you might need that could help you, such as voice
(incidentally I use an app named Voice for audiobooks), or even a
completely different audio player. Their devices might be a bit pricey
for something you might not be completely sure will do what you want
though.

I am on my 4th sansa clip+ (over about 15 years. Love it to death. I get
mine on ebay ... last one cost me US$30. I love it in every way - small,
long battery, handles huge storage (I have a 128GB card), all the rockbox
features ...

The last one was acquired about a year ago. It's doing great so far,
although there are some signs of the clip starting to detach (always a
bummer .. it doesn't affect actual device functionality, but makes
"wearing" it harder).
I used it for a substantial part of my recent santa fe -> seattle bike ride
recently, and once again was delighted with everything about it.

I still have three different Sansa Players in my folder not used for the last 10 years -
surely
older than your clip. All have a certain version of Rockbox installed. I wouldn't mind
to send you
one of those without costs. I would be glad if you could make use of it. There are:
Sansa E250 (2 GB)
Sansa E260 (4 GB)
Sansa Fuzz (2 Gb)
I'm just charging all three to investigate their usefulness. There are drawbacks
though. For the
E260 the cursor is jumping around a bit by using the jog wheel (is this the name for it?).
And the
Fuzz has a soft back cover that is very sticky meanwhile. Maybe one can use some solvent
to get rid
of it.

Isopropyl or rubbing alcohol and a piece of cloth you definitely never
need again will get you back a tolerable surface for a few years (then
you need to repeat). This is a common problem with "rubbery" plastic
surfaces intended to feel expensive to the touch.
Don't use solvents more organic than that, or all kinds like bad things
may happen. For example, there are few plastics that will not get
destroyed by acetone or other nailpolish remover.

don't
wanted to wait for an online order but I was able to use antiseptic containing alcohol
(Kodan
Tinktur) to fully remove the rubber on the back of the player.
