Oops, I've just realized, that at one point I forgot to CC the list.
Sorry about that!

Anyway, I compiled the sourceforge version of qjackctl, and it works
fine, so it must be a  distribution-related bug.

 Is it possible that it appears -- but just has a different name? 
 There's a "Midi Through" there, both as a readable and a writable
 client (the other readables are hydrogen and ardour), but nothing
 happens when I connect it to fluidsynth. Could this be a problem with
 fluidsynth? (It does report a few problems when started.) Is there  a
 more direct way of testing whether the keyboard works?
