Dear All,
has someone managed to run successfully focusrite-control.exe inside wine?
I'd really like to access the hardware mixer from Linux.
I have no windows installed on my Laptop, so I can't test whether there is
an issue with the usb ports.
I installed focusrite-control-2.1.7.exe in all kind of different ways,
using wine from kubuntu 17.10, and winehg-staging. All I managed is that the
programm opens and reports "No Hardware connected", same for the ASIO control.
I also tried the live version of io-live--2017.03--e22-k4.14-k4.14-rt1-amd64,
with the same result.
Opening winecfg I can switch to my Scarlett 18i20 and pushing the
button for testing sound it works. I've also installed OpenMPT1.27.02 inside wine
and it works nicely. There, I can even switch to 96kHz, which doesn't work on
ALSA/JACK,
so something is done inside wine, not just passing to the outside.

I didn't test running the Scarlett 18i20 software in wine or using a
VM. I suspect the culprit is, that any kind of virtual
machine/emulation still rely on the host's drivers/kernel modules.
Did you try to add the 18i20 ID to the Linux thingy (I've forgotten it's
name) available for the Scarlett series?
I don't care for two reasons, until now I only used the 18i20 2nd Gen
for my iPad and even if should use it for Linux, I simply would need a
class compliant interface, the same way it's used with the iPad.
I'm using Linux for mixing purpose with a RME HDSPe AIO. The next
interface I much likely will buy is a RME Babyface, for usage in class
compliant mode, too. The loss of HDSPmixer is much harder, than missing
the Focusrite mixer, but actually class compliant usage without
proprietary/vendor specific software is the most painless way to go.

Yes sure, but I was too lazy after buying it. Since it immediately worked
for recording with 48kHz I was too optimistic in assuming the rest will
eventually work, although I had the option to bringing it back, if it doesn't
work within Linux.

That should not work, as the 2nd generation is seemingly quiet different form the 1st
generation.
Even the Windows Driver are different and Focusrite points out, that one can not
interchange them.

I'm sorry, I don't have got the time to test it, but I'll keep it in
mind. Btw. I experience a similar issue with my RME HDSPe at what ever
sampling rate I'm using. Just 2 of the 8 ADAT IOs of my RME card
provide an audio signal.

used by ALSA (kernel driver), you cannot at the same time access it from
a user-space application (maybe try unloading the ALSA snd-usb module,
but I would not get my hopes up).
The first generation of scarlett-devices is supported by the
Linux-kernel. Since Linux 3.19 there is a dedicated driver to expose the
complete mixer interface and there are also some UIs.
At some point Focusrite changed the USB-IDs, and perhaps also the
protocol. As far as I know, nobody has yet investigated or reverse
engineered those.

Well, if I remove the usb sound module, it gets reloaded by plugging in the device.
Blacklisting it doesn't make sense to me.
Note, that I can access the 18i20 within wine from MPT (a windows programm) and it works
fine.

Dear All,
just for those who are interested.
I installed VirtualBox and a Windows-10 (90 days trial version from Microsoft)
as a guest. From that I can connect to the Scarlet 18i20, and the Focusrite mixer program
starts
and gives sometimes (strangely not always) access to the mixer. Interestingly,
the Focusrite ASIO program always finds the Hardware, so this supports the remark by
Robin, that those two are indeed independent.
I can't run jack on the same device at the same time, as the virtual machine has
grabbed the device.

It looks like, provided I don't actively access the device via Jack or pulseaudio,
it doesn't get blocked by the Linux system.
I made a first test using a Windows version of ardour inside Windows guest.
Seems to run fine at 48kHz, at 96kHz I can record, but it sounds terrible.

The guest still needs the host's *hci* modules, but blacklisting the
snd* modules might allow the guest's software to get access to some
features. However, even if this should be the case, as you already
pointed out, this doesn't make sense, since you want to access features
by the guest, to improve working with the host, accessing the Focusrite
by the class compliant host's driver.
