I would like to buy either a soundcard or dedicated MIDI interface for MIDI
applications on a PC, and was wondering if people had any recommendations?
My criteria are:
1) Either PCI or USB
2) Good ALSA/kernel support on 2.4.22+ and 2.6 kernels
3) Good MIDI support/reputation
4) Ideally 2 out ports, but 1 would be ok
5) 1 in port is fine
6) If it's a USB device, it would be handy if it also worked on a Mac
I've been looking at the Midisport 2x2 as a possible contender. Any
thoughts/recommendations would be greatly appreciated! I'm running Gentoo,
if that makes any difference!

I have one of those edirol um-1 usb interfaces. It worked pretty much out
of the box on my laptop and 2 of my desktops. All slackware machines with
2.4.20ish low-lat/pre-empt kernels and alsa 0.9.6.
I got it because you don't have to do any firmware/bios loading as (i think)
you have to do with the midisport usb interfaces.
I use it to drive an old Dr. Rythm drum machine.
Drums++ rocks.

An old PCI sound card plus a gameport/MIDI cable might be cheaper than
a USB MIDI interface, but the latter is more flexible, and a must if
you want more than 1/1 ports.
For supported PCI cards, see the soundcard matrix (please note that
MIDI on ES1938 chips is not supported). All USB MIDI interfaces from
Edirol, ESI, Midiman, and Yamaha are supported.

I think it is done by default when the driver is loaded now. For the
quattro at least.
