Hi,
is there an mp3/m4a player to run under Linux Mint 17/64 and play from
an playlist
with equal volume? (replayGain or similar, but it should work!).
Please help need it for a christmas event next week.

Clementine claims to have support for replayGain since 2010 - I have never used
it though:

When you use the Replay Gain option your music files need appropriate metadata.
Clementine cannot create it but you can use external tools, e.g.,

Mixxx will do all this - add the tracks to the auto-dj playlist, and enable
auto-dj, has automatic replay gain.

I really like DeaDBeeF player. It can use replaygain for playback, and
also has a plugin available to calculate it and write the required metadata.
If it's not in Mint repo, the version from MX Linux repo should work, or
the .deb from their website.

Hi,
I thank you all very much for tips and hints.
I have found Clementine is a very nice player where works fine cross
fading and replay gain and I can easily handle my playlists (xspf).
I have also tried to create replay gain values with foobar2000 and
finally Clementine played the music well.
Remains a QUESTION:
is there a good tool on Linux to replace Foobar2000 for getting the
replay gain values?
I have a windows box too but I want to do the whole job on my Linux device.

vorbisgain - add replaygain volume tags to Ogg Vorbis files.
normalize-audio - adjusts the volume of WAV, MP3 and OGG files to a
standard volumne level. I think this would change the actual level of
the file, not set a replay gain value. But, of course, then the sound
level would be the same in any audio player.

Hi,
I once tried normalize-audio but this is , from my point of view,
destroing the impression of the sound. Especially for songs with high
dynamic.
I have got working Foobar2000 under wine but I am still searching for a
native Linux tool which can scan for replaygain and change the
appropriate tags.

A normal "normalize" shouldn't compress audio. I've got an iOS DAW that
provides a limiter feature for "normalize" and allows to make the
highest level quasi > 0 dBFS, IOW the normalized signal than is
limited/compressed. However, without using such a feature, a regular
"normalize" just increases everything by the same amount, so
fortunately the impression of the sound stays unchanged, unfortunately
"normalize" doesn't "normalize" to an averaged loudness
impression, if
possible, the level just increases. "normalize" makes the highest
level of a wav 0 dBFS, by increasing the complete wav level, it the
highest level can't be increased, than "normalize" does nothing at all.

Hi Ralf,
maybe it was the normalize routine of VLC which made this bad effect.
I have now found that the raplygain scanned by Foobar2000 can be played
from Clementine, but not by VLC. I have tried both entries for raplygain
(Track and Album) but neither nor it worked.
I hope that Clementine is running under Linux Mint 17 (should be based
on 16.04 Ubuntu).

normalize-audio is not suitable for lossy files as it needs to
uncompress then recompress the file causing quality loss.
As I mentioned earlier, DeaDBeeF with the 2 plugins works well and is
very similar to Foobar2000. It's not in Debian repos but the .deb on the
website works perfectly.
mp3gain has been dropped from Debian (still available from Wheezy repo),
but python-rgain is its replacement.
My favourite tool for replaygain is SoundKonverter which can process any
number of files in one set, but may need a few KDE dependencies. It also
depends on mp3gain but works if you manually install the Wheezy version.

Hi,
here my solution I used which solved mx problems for the Christmas Party
except that I used one Windows program under wine.
But I did not have time enough to try the solution proposed by Roger.
Used equipment:
iBook 13" 2GB RAM with Linux MINT 17 xfce
Used SW:
Clementine 1.3.1 Player with Remote control via Android App.
FooBar2000 1.3.13 (under wine)
Database creation:
simply with "ls -1 > dbfile" and then imported into Libre Office Calc,
preprocessed and exported with field separator "#".
With some scripts (.SH and AWK) I could search for Titles, Artists and
word combinations very quickly and also prepare automatically the xml
playlists for Clementine (the .xpsf format is understand also by iTunes
and other famous players).
Equal volume:
To have an almost equal volume while playing the songs I made a scan
with FooBar2000 and wrote back into the mp3 tags the "replayGain values".
Clementine, adjust properties:
Dont forget to activate in Clementine remote Control and also use of the
replay gain values for each track.
Summary:
During the Event all nessecary features worked well. The volume was
almost the same. No adjustment during Playback was necessary.
Clementine is very easy to handle with playlists also if they are
created in the background while playing. There is no need to import the
music in advance. No big diskspace necessary.
Also the remote control apllication worked fine.
Not very necessary on that list to know but Clementine works in the same
way on Windows too.

I used Foobar2000 for long time as best replaygain scanning solution. Still
have it installed, more as audio toolkit than player now.
There is command-line mp3gain package, but I believe this has been dropped
from Debian and Ubuntu repositories. I was able to compile older version of
mp3gain from Ubuntu 14.04 for Ubuntu Studio 16.04 no problem. Not necessary
now as Martin Wimpress created an Ubuntu repository for mp3gain and aacgain

I use QtGain <https://sourceforge.net/projects/qtgain/> as GUI front-end,
easy to drag a folder or file in to scan. I also added a custom right click

Got those, I guess they'll work, haven't tried them yet.

Hmm, install instructions say to run qmake. I didn't have qmake
installed. I finally got qmake by installing the qt4-make and qt5-make
packages. Make then greeted me with errors about not finding QtWidgets.
Any other way to compile this? Or obtain a binary?
