just upgraded mandrake from 8.2 to 9.0....
and found out that it seems to have made my alsa all foobar.... :(
i recompiled and reinstalled alsa 0.9.rc5 after upgrading... but i dont
seem to be able to get it working.
im running a quattro usb audio unit... modprobe snd-usb-audio,
snd-pcm-oss, snd-mixer-oss, snd-seq-oss all goes fine... but on opening
any sound or DVD apps i get error messages that there is no sound
support / no sound device found....
anyone got any ideas what may have happened?... is there a problem with
the supplied kernel perhaps ? it appears to be 2.4.19-16mdk

/dev/dsp isnt there.... :-/ nor is /dev/audio
/dev/sequencer is... but nothing else....
weird, as the modules are loading fine....
what do you think would cause this? it was all fine under 8.2 with alsa
0.9.rc5 ... i only did upgrade install of mandrake to 9.0 and then
reinstalled same version of alsa......

I had the same problem after upgrading my kernel to 2.4.20
just today and an Alsa drivers recompile/reinstall, plus the above
put things right.

Isn't it a good idea that snddevices should be run by "make install" ?
And that alsactl should load default values for the non-geeks?
And that in the INSTALL file, the option --with-soundcard="xyz" should be
clearly pointed, because I was used to compile a bunch of unused cards just to have mine
working.
Alsa is years old now, and totally rough for the installation.
I for one doesn't still know if my ymfpci soundcard can play midi, as by default alsa
disables this option and the INSTALL file is unclear on the way to succeed.
'scuse me for ranting. I try to contribute to GNU where I can and don't want to be
like a whiner.

hi... hmm... well i've done ./snddevices now and still no luck :-(
not really sure why this is happening now....
i started up, ran ./snddevices, modprobe snd-usb-audio, snd-pcm-oss,
snd-mixer-oss snd-seq-oss all works fine....
but....
ogle and Xine still crash when i run them, saying unable to open alsa...
xmms complains there is no sound card....
this is a fresh install of alsa 0.9.rc5 under mandrake 9.0 - it was
running fine under mandrake 8.2, all i've done is upgrade to mdk 9.0 and
recompile & reinstall...
any ideas?... i'm kinda stuck now, i've done everything right, got an
.asoundrc as per the instructions for usb audio... the weirdest thing
was that it all ran absolutely fine until i upgraded mandrake....

possible they started using devfs with the latest version? If so you
might need to adjust it to create the Alsa dev files. Do the dev files
exist? Can you do "cat /dev/dsp"?

Not really sure, it just worked in Debian ;-) But you might look at the
/etc/modules.conf file for something like

alias /dev/dspW /dev/sound
alias /dev/midi /dev/sound

Mandrake 9.0 has it's own ALSA preinstalled (0.9rc2, I
believe). Perhaps you created conflicts between the
old and new installations/modules.
In general, getting ALSA to work in Mandrake 9 only
requires editing modules.conf (often this is setup
automatically as well). I also recommend installing
alsa development libs and of course the utils:
urpmi libalsa-devel
...which installs
libalsa2-devel-0.9.0-0.8rc2mdk.i586.rpm
AND
urpmi alsa-utils
...which installs alsa-utils-0.9.0-0.6rc2mdk.i586.rpm
Then create an .asoundrc, etc.
The modules.conf syntax used by Mandrake is somewhat
less verbose than off of the ALSA site, but seems to
work equally well. For this machine with an rme9652,
modules.conf says simply:
alias sound-slot-0 snd-rme9652
above snd-rme9652 snd-pcm-oss
The devfs system takes care of creating snddevices for
you (and this is mentioned in the ALSA installation
instructions). It specifies NOT to run ./snddevices
on devfs enabled systems, like Mandrake.
So, as to how to solve your problem, try to sort out
the old modules from the new, discarding the old if
possible (old are in
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/sound/ on my system,
with subdirs:
core i2c isa pci synth usb

ahhh thanks kevin... yes that would make perfect sense, i noticed that
mandrake was using 0.9.rc2 and naively assumed that i'd manage to
upgrade it if i installed 0.9.rc5 from source (im not using rc6 yet
because of the record problems in usb-audio - not sure if they were
there in rc5 as well ).
ok.... slight problem in that i've already run ./snddevices....
should i uninstall alsa 0.9.rc2? or just manually remove the modules it
has installed?
i'll install the extra libs, and i've got an .asoundrc for the quattro
already....
my alsa portion of modules.conf reads like this at the moment: would you
be able to correct it for me? im familiar with oss but quite new to
alsa.... so im not used to these structures...

Ah yes. RPM or tarball?? The kernel modules are
built as modules with the kernel, no RPM, but the libs
are installed separately in /usr/lib. I think the
tarballs, however, install the libs, etc in /usr/local
(you can correct me here), thus the potential for
conflict.
As to resolutions, here are some ideas.
1. Uninstall the rc5 stuff (is their a make distclean
or make uninstall in the ALSA packages?), and install
the libs-devel and utils as I suggested before urpmi).
In that case, you should only need to edit your
modules.conf, which I can help with if you go this
route.
2. Uninstall the rc5 stuff and install the latest MDK
kernel (2.4.20, in the "cooker") which includes rc5
modules. You can the install the libs-devel and utils
as RPM's then, but they will be rc2.
3. Uninstall alsa-libs (urpme libalsa), throw away the
old modules (you might tar them up first just to be
safe), and reinstall the rc5 libs just to make sure
anything that got removed gets put back.
The ./snddevices question is another problem. I'm
afraid I don't know enough about it to help. Perhaps
someone else has an answer...

I don't see where you have specified a module for
card-0, is this not all of your modules.conf??

We can get to fixing modules.conf depending on what
you do. I have not seen the devfs stuff in
modules.conf before, though it should be fine there.
Usually, an addition is made to /etc/devfsd.conf.
This is, again, outlined in the ALSA install readme.
However, Mandrake 9 seems to take care of things just
fine here without any devfs specifications whatsoever.

hi all.....
well im afraid its not quite as simple as i thought.... got errors this
morning same as usual when loading the usb-audio modules.
not really sure what would have caused this except that i've
rebooted.... maybe i havent cleaned out the existing alsa stuff from
mandrake enough?....
this is very confusing... last night everything worked fine....
i'll try all the steps i went through last night.... but im quite
puzzled.... again here is my modules.conf.... i might need some help on
this as mandrake 9.0 runs devfs.....

no... thats the strangest thing, if it was unresolved symbols it would
make sense....
modprobe snd-usb-audio snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd seq-oss all are
fine... no errors at all.....
what happens is i open up xmms or any other sound app and it complains
my soundcard isnt there!

weird.... very weird.... apps are still complaining of no soundcard, but
this is output of ls -l /dev/dsp:
[root@hamish alsa-driver-0.9.0rc5]# ls -l /dev/dsp
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 9 Dec 16 13:09 /dev/dsp ->
/dev/dsp0
alias entries are still there in modules.conf too....
one thing i didnt do last night (because the soundcard got running
without it) was uninstall the mandrake alsa rpms... i might do that...
after all rc5 source should have everything i need there... it might be
confusing the files....

complaining of no soundcard, but

/dev/dsp0
alias entries are still there in modules.conf too....
one thing i didnt do last night (because the soundcard got running
without it) was uninstall the mandrake alsa rpms... i might do that...
after all rc5 source should have everything i need there... it might be
confusing the files....

no... thats the strangest thing, if it was
unresolved symbols it would

modprobe snd-usb-audio snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd seq-oss all are
fine... no errors at all.....
what happens is i open up xmms or any other sound app and it complains
my soundcard isnt there!

i dont actually have a device called /dev/sound..... just a directory

ok..... i'm trying this... same steps as last night:
make sure alsa-data, libalsa2 and libalsa2-devel rpms are installed
cd /usr/src/alsa-driver
make uninstall
make clean
removed all modules from /lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/sound
./configure --with-cards=usb-audio,cs4232,cs4231,cs4236,cs46xx
(others are internal sound for thinkpad 600E which i havent got working
yet but i build them anyhow!)
make
make produces a lot of this stuff... anyone know what it is?

Hm. Sorry, I could be wrong, but are you installing
the rpms, then installing the sources? My
troubleshooting ideas were not a sequence of things to
do, but a list of OPTIONS.
What you want is to EITHER uninstall the tarball
builds and go with the RPM's, or uninstall the alsa
RPMS (and clean up the modules), and then do a clean
install from the tarballs. I though you had done the
latter before...maybe I am still missing something.

sorry... i didnt fill you in on all this....
somehow it seemed to work last night without removing anything so i was
trying to reproduce it...
however... i think if im gonna go with tarballs, which is easier for me
to understand, then ive gotta figure out some way of removing *all* of
the alsa libs from mandrake.... otherwise there are thousands of apps
that complain when i try to do rpm -e libalsa2 for example....
hmm... it might be worth me tryig the second option....
in which case i'd need to update kernel and get latest rpms from
mandrake cooker?... and thats all i need to do?...
then just modprobe as usual?.... scuse obvious questions but i havent
done alsa from rpms before ;-)...
are you running your mandrake builds for ECMC from rpms or tarballs?...
im in the process of downloading your turnkey audio, it looks really
good and i'd like to run it as its built for mdk 9.0 - its probably a
good idea if i work on the same system as yours....
one thing i do need to sort out is devfs because i cant run my modem (a
winmodem, grrrr!) without it...

That's fine. Fi these are merely alsa conflicts
(which you are trying to resolve anyway) then you can
do rpm -e --force to ignore those conflicts.

There are docs for this on the Mandrake User pages.
If you do this, do "rpm -ivh, NOT rpm -Uvh which will

preemption patches, but it uses 2.4.19, and the rc2

That's fine. Fi these are merely alsa conflicts
(which you are trying to resolve anyway) then you can
do rpm -e --force to ignore those conflicts.

Another shot in the dark. XMMS doesn't like anything else having (or
recntly having the soundcard). Check to see if artsd is running. If
so, kill it and then run XMMS.

chmod a+rw /dev/dsp*
after running snddevices or changing the symlink for /dev/dsp
xmms and other OSS apps running as normal user complain about not being
able to find/access the device if you don't.

so that means you are not getting the modules loaded. If the audio
modules are loaded you would have /dev/sound/dsp and the others.

you can do this manually for testing. Just rm -rf /dev/dsp, then
ln -s /dev/sound/dsp /dev/dsp. Does that work?

one thing i didnt do last night (because the soundcard got running
without it) was uninstall the mandrake alsa rpms... i might do
that... after all rc5 source should have everything i need there...
it might be confusing the files....

the other weird thing is i have nothing in
/dev/sound except
/dev/sound/sequencer and /dev/sound/sequencer2....
mdk should have created /dev/sound from my modules.conf yes?...
i dont actually have a device called /dev/sound..... just a directory
with the two sequencers:

I have been fighting with audio set-up on Mandrake 9.0 recently also.
Mandrake's use of 'devfs' makes file entries appear in and disappear
from /dev in lawless chaotic fashion. Or at least magical and
undocumented fashion. Currently the system state is such that running
the alsa command 'aconnect -o -l' causes a bunch of sound device files
to appear in /dev and /dev/sound, one of which is /dev/sequencer.
Before running aconnect, MIDI-player programs abort complaining that
/dev/sequencer is not there, after, they work.
Some background, in case anyone cares: This was not my main system, so I
gave it an old SB-AWE ISA card. Mandrake has dropped support for
setting up ISA cards with ALSA, and fell back on directing me to an old
Red Hat script that enabled the card with, it turns out, the old kernel
sound system (the OSS-compatible one). Most sound applications shipped
with Mandrake 9.0 seem to be configured NOT to work with these drivers.
I turned off auto-loading of this old sound driver and manually loaded
the ALSA modules for this card. At this point DSP output worked but
MIDI did not. At some point I ran 'aconnect -o -l' just wondering what
it would say, and the sequencer magically appeared and started working!
Devfs makes Linux disturbingly Microsoft-like, in that it seems to guess
what it thinks I ought to want to do, and does it for me without asking
permission or even explaining what it has done or why. And sometimes it
guesses wrong. Does anyone know of a good explanation of devfs in
general or alsa-devfs interaction in particular that I could read?

Do you have the following file: /etc/devfsd.conf
On my distro, gentoo, it controls how devfs behaves.
Also: man devfsd.conf may give you some help

This sounds vaguely familiar. I'm running RH but since Mandrake was
originally a RH clone it might be the same thing. I would build and
install ALSA and everything would work fine until the reboot. If you
look at the directions for installing ALSA the last thing you do is a
modprobe snd-WHATEVER. This loads the driver. When you reboot it
doesn't seem to get loaded from just what's in modules.conf. What I do
is add the modprobe line to one of the startup scripts in
/etc/rc.d/init.d. If you don't have one of your own that you're running
then the easy way is to add your modprobe line to /etc/rc.d/rc.local.
You can check to see if this is your problem by doing a modprobe
snd-WHATEVER. If your sound cranks back up again that's what it is.

hmmmmm
thats where things get really strange... everything matches your
experience so far... except i've been loading things manually after
boot. so im manually doing modprobe snd-usb-audio, it works fine but
then apps complain there is no soundcard....
i didnt uninstall the mandrake alsa rpms, i think i'll do that and try
again.... can always reinstall after all :)

Well, I have been using the latest cvs over the past two weeks and have
made some recordings at 44100, 16 bit. The device is rock solid as long
as you only record from channel 3 and 4. Output works for channels 1,2,3,4.
So much for it being fully supported. I think it's better to say that
all features have been reported as working over the past year ;)
