I don't know... I think Mandrake's pretty particular. You can't escape all
of
the Mandrake rpms on the net though... I doubt you'd have a problem.

Every time I try to download an audio package from a Mandrake repository
it complains that I don't have the necessary dependency packages
installed on my internet machine, and asks me to insert one of more of
the Mandrake 9.2 discs into my cdrom drive. After installing packages I
don't really want on my internet machine, I click on the download link
and it *INSTALLS* the package I want to put on my audio machine at home
on my internet machine. YUCK.
Is there any way to download these packages so I can burn them to a CD
and bring them home to my audio machine? Or maybe repackage them from
the installed copy?
My audio machine at home is not on the internet, and never will be due
to the presence of unreleased audio tracks - no network connection is
the most reliable firewall ever created.
Evey time I move a desktop machine I always have trouble getting it back
up and running again. I have quite a few friends who do this regularly,
but they have custom built machines in shock mounted cases (as my next
one will be; my current machines are rebuilt slavage in commercial cases).

Sure. Just download and burn them. But don't expect packages build for
Mandrake 10 to run properly on 9.2 or whatever.

You could copy all the rpms you need to a CD or DVD, then run
gendistrib, then urpmi.addmedia, and you could use it to install RPMs on
any machine.

Debian's apt-get has a switch for the install command that tells it to
download the .deb package but not to install it. Surely Mandrake's GUI
installer is only a front end for a similar command line program that
might have a similar switch?

A separate firewall machine that you only connect when you want to
download and install new software packages is comes a pretty close second
:-)

Agreed -- unless a .deb has been specifically packaged for Mandrake
(I've never heard of any) you don't want to use it. Likewise, you want
to use rpms packaged for the specific version of Mandrake you are
using. (There's a chance others would work, but I'd only try that as a
last resort.)

Yes. Not sure why when you click on the download link the package is
being installed -- are you doing the download within one of the rpm
managers (urpmi or similar)? Don't do it there, simply start the
download from, for example, your browser or an FTP program.
If you need "dependencies" download those the same way. (You can even
do this on Windows, burn the CD, then take the CD to a Mandrake machine
for installation.)
