I first read about this a couple of years back. They have come a long
way. Looks really fun to use now:

The reactable, is a state-of-the-art multi-user electro-acoustic music
instrument with a tabletop tangible user interface. Several simultaneous
performers share complete control over the instrument by moving physical
artefacts on the table surface and constructing different audio
topologies in a kind of tangible modular synthesizer or graspable
flow-controlled programming language.

Basically yes. (You could do without a projector actually.)
Additionally you need the cubes which are printed with special
patterns (Fiducials) so that their positions and rotations can be read
correctly. You could then for example use the "reacTIVision" software
to read from a V4L-device and generate OSC-messages according to the
patterns that have been recognized, or use the [pix_fiducialtrack]
object to analyze a video stream with fiducials in Pd/Gem.
