Hi all,
sorry for this potentially OT post but since I just fried my mac, I was wondering if any
of you know if it is ok to put ATA drive on an IDE chain (I have access to a PC now...).
It'd be nice to recycle my HD at least...

Should be OK. ATA is (pretty much) the same thing as IDE. IDE allows
only two devices per channel (chain). You might want to check that
the DMA speed is the same as the other drive in the chain (usually
33, 66 or 100 MHz). Both drives will run at the slowest speed. If you
have a spare channel (most PCs have two) you could put it on this.

In the usual meanings of those acronyms, ATA and IDE amount to the
same type of drive - should be no problem.
Whether you'll be able to read a Mac filesystem on a PC (even running
Linux) is a more interesting question :-)

It's no problem at all! :-)
just
# modprobe hfs
# mount -t hfs /dev/[your partition] /mnt/
If you have hfs support compiled in the kernel, that is. Most modern
distros do.
You will lose all resource forks, but Linux can't use those anyway.

I might have guessed it was easy as that...
It's always amused me hugely that for a long time Linux could read both
Microsoft's file systems (NTFS and FAT32) while neither of MS's own
systems (NT and W9x) could!

there are some (slightly clunky) tools for reading hfs+ and there is a
kernel module in development for mounting hfs+ read/ write. Think it
works quite slowly at the moment.
if you have a macos install (which the person who originally started
this didn't), you're better off using mol and mounting a netatalk
share on the host machine.

I don't intend to read a Mac fs. I was running linux on my Mac. I think different
