Hello. I'm excited about my new audio setup. Got everything working nicely.
Have no experience or knowledge of audio engineering so please bear with me
if I ask dumb questions.
1) Why use MIDI? I have heard stuff that I recorded professionally
sequenced with MIDI and must say that I can hear a difference. Is this
because it's all perfectly synced up? What are other advantages, if any, of
MIDI over audio?
I'd like to play with Rosegarden but don't have any MIDI files except the
ones I made with Hydrogen. If I wanted to sync up a guitar track perfectly
with the MIDI beat, I guess the best way would be to have the guitar track
as MIDI too, but I don't have a MIDI hardware device. Next question...
2) Is there Linux software that can convert an audio signal/file to MIDI?

I asked myself that same question, before I learned to use MIDI keyboard
with nice software synths, and MIDI drum pads with hydrogen (& realistic
drum samples).
I don't do MIDI sequencing at all. just use MIDI hardware to control the
software that produces realistic sounds :-)

Midi and audio are not the same thing. With midi, you record the
"score" of the music (notes used, velocity, and timing). You can
playback a midi file of "fûr elise", and link it with a digital piano,
or a sampler that will play a trumpet. MIDI doesn't record any sound,
just the score.

If you want a real guitar sound, and not a synthesized or sampled one,
there is no use for midi.
To synchronize a midi track with an audio track, the only way, is to
edit the guitar track in the audio domain.

There are such software (i don't know for linux), but they do a very
poor job at it. And what would be the purpose ?

There might be another way, if your MIDI app can be synchronized to
Ardour:
1) Load your audio track into ardour
2) turn on the click track
3) adjust the initial meter & tempo to match (as closely as you can)
the tempo of the audio track.
4) Press play. When the click track drifts away from the audio track,
add and adjust more tempo markers as needed. Repeat as necessary.
This is tedious and painstaking work, especially if the original audio
has very fluid tempo and/or uses multiple meters. But for rock or pop
music at least, it can usually be done. It's much easier if the
original performance was recorded with a very steady tempo in a single
meter, eg. using a click track.
Once you've done that, if your sequencer can sync to ardour, hopefully
it will Just Work :) I haven't tried this yet. But I have used the
click track and tempo markers exactly as described above, to help me
figure out some performances with tricky meter changes and tempo
variations.

2. Listen to track in Ardour while playing my keyboard along with it.
This keyboard is sending MIDI signals to Rosegarden, which is just

minor mistakes, and adjust timing if necessary.
4. Play MIDI from Rosegarden into LinuxSampler to make it sound like a
real piano. This resulting audio is then recorded in Ardour as
another track.
If I were just playing keyboard -> LinuxSampler -> Ardour, I would not
have the opportunity to do step 3. Also, what if I later decide I
want to change the key or tempo I was playing in. You cannot do this
very easily (if at all) with pure audio. You would have to play the
piece over again.

Most, if not all pitch-to-MIDI converters only work with monophonic
audio files. In other words, one person singing, one trumpet playing,
etc. This is because of the extreme difficulty in separating out the
timbres and timings of multiple notes. It just gets really messy and
inaccurate. As a result, not many people have taken pitch-to-MIDI
very seriously.
I would be happy for someone to show that I'm wrong in saying this,
but this is how I currently understand it.

I see. Thanks to everybody for your input. I can see how easy it is to work
with MIDI and I guess I thought that it would be possible to work with audio
the same way (perfect pitch shifts, perfect timing, etc.). I guess what
still puzzles me is working with both together. Is it possible to
synchronize an audio track with a MIDI drum track, or do you just have to
play the audio around the MIDI so that everything syncs up the old fashioned
way (by ear)? Also, can you stretch an audio track (say in Rosegarden or
Ardour) just a tad without warping it too much so that the final note of
your chorus hits exactly on time with the crash, for example?

At the momment, MIDI has to go first since I do not know of a DAW that
has an easy way to setup a tempo map according to a tempo on an audio
track. Though, If you feel interested by this feature, it would make 2
of us. ;-)
According to some talks on this topic at the linux audio conference,
the best way to have this implemented is to have tempo map support in
jackd. That would be just awesome...
