In a stereo track I added a mono region.
This is only audible in the left channel and I'm not able to find out
how to make it output to both channels?

You can either add a mono to stereo plugin or you can add another output
to the track. I'd probably add the output unless I wanted to use a
stereo plugin to effect the track.

I think I misunderstood. I assumed that the mono region was the only
thing in the track.
You could add a new mono track for this and add the region to it. There's
no reason to try and conserve tracks. If you really want it to be in the
stereo track with other regions, I'd convert the original region source to
stereo and import that.

But I'll take your advice anyway and add a mono track for the mono
regions, and try to lessen the confusion by assigning useful names to
both tracks and regions.

will do the trick.
