Thanks to some recent help here, I've now found several applications that
appear to control my DIO2448 with ALSA.
I still can't get it to record fromt he SPDIF input though.
ALSA has installed the generic CMI PCI 8738 driver, which I believe is
the correct thing to do. Apps like alsamixergui have the right switches,
but something seems to be disabled. The IEC958 In select doen't respond,
and I can't find any docs which explain, e.g.
- what combination of controls is required for this
- what "IEC958 IN Valid" means (it's a control input, not a status
display...)
- what values I'm likely to need to change with iecset
I can enable/disable monitoring of IEC958 input though analog output,
and the IEC958 phase invert has the expected effect, so the driver is
installed correctly.
Should I be able to record with Audacity 1.2.0, with the alsa-oss package
installed? Audacity plays OK.

i dont know what causes this. It is like this on some of my systems
and not others. Even without the switch though, the spdif input is
available as alsa hw:0,2. Getting apps to use this subdevice 2 is a
bit hit and miss. Some require the subdevice to be specified and some
(such as Jack i think) dont. Non-alsa apps are more tricky.
i wonder though if this should be reported as an alsa driver bug,
perhaps related to chipset revisions?

makes no difference as far as i can tell.

none that i know of.

'scuse my ignorance, but how and where do I use the string
"alsa hw:0,2"?
By the way, it would help in debugging this (and probably be a usefult
tool anyway) to have a recording application that displays the input
signal on a meter of some sort.
arecord doesn't show anything about the signal (unless I've missed
something)
audacity would be OK, but while things aren't working I can never be
sure whether this is an oss emulation problem (I'm aware audacity isn't
perfect in this respect) or an ALSA driver problem.
Perhaps I sould install ardour and jack? Sledgehammer to crack a nut,
and introducing more unknowns, but there is a long term plan to use them
for multitrack mixing eventually.

arecord displays the input signal with the -vv switch. If you don't
want to actually record to a file, use something like:
arecord -D hw:0,2 -f dat -vv /dev/null
(or "-f cd" if the input is 44.1 kHz)

So that's how I should use "hw:" !

Yes, I must have read some of "man arecord" because I knew about -f cd
