This does not happen in vlc 2.6.1. So it's a problem with

Nothing displayed with vlc 3.0.3. Nothing in the output of
vorbiscomment --list nor ogginfo to indicate that anything other than
text comments are included in the metadata.

My spin on it is that it reacts on metadata entered int he file such as
track title, author, etc... I use vlc regularly on the music I create
and I never had any images added, and I never add any metadata.
Linux Mint 18 seems to be locked at 2.2.2. Ah well, it's not a harmful
bug.
