Check the usb cable. Or you can reset it to the
initial state,
which AFAIK has usb connection turned on by default.
/var/log/messages or dmesg should show something like
usb 4-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
at least
The cable was the problem. It looked plugged in to me. But, it
didn't "look" plugged in as far as my computer was concerned.
