Hello everyone,
Does anyone have any experience using a VMWare session to run Windows
audio apps? I can't get VMWare to output to ALSA.
It appears to use OSS. I have the OSS emulation loaded and use it on
a daily basis for esd. It'd be swell if I could sync it to Jack, but
I know that's probably not gonna happen ::-).
Also, how about MIDI support with USB devices? Should I expect that
to work?
Any tips? Thanks in advance!

vmware pretty much sucks for audio even at v5.0, but only because they dont care - its
virtually impossible to get it to play anything without dropouts, due to the
extraordinarily short buffer it uses. i messed with /proc/asound OSS-emu buffersize stuff
a bit before giving up..seems hardcoded in vmware..
and theres something called vmwareDSP: http://platan.vc.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/ , which i
think is experimental support for ARTS/ESD , in theory if you used arts backend as JACK,
that might be a way in..didnt work here..
another thing u could try is make a VST plugin that spits audio over UDP, to talk to
jack.UDP or jack.udpsync..which would proably work well with low latency over the
loopback.. and of course MIDI tunneled thru OSC is already working fine..i gave up on a
Jack.UDP-VST since i hate c++ and on win32 only use samplitude anyways, so the occasional
dropouts are no prob during editing...

Has anyone got any comments about using dual heads while doing working
with linux audio apps?
I just want to put meters, qjackctl and gamix or whatever mundane
things on on monitor and keep the stuff I am fiddling with on the main
pain.
I'll use xbox window management and the ccrma low latency patch.
Pentium m 2.0 GHZ(not optimal I know but its what I have) and FC3 ccrma.
Is this going to be slow?

Shouldn't be, the Pentium M's are better for audio work (IMHO) than
pentium 4's, due to better denormal handling, and can do more
clock-for-clock.
With dual heads the performance of your graphics card and its drivers will
be more critical.

don't care much about 3D performance. Do the dual head features on
most cards work with Fedora out of the box?

My DAW has an ATI 7500 and 8500 card, both with DVI outs. This works out
of the box with Fedora (core 1 and 2). The only probelm is the extra fan
noise in the studio.

ok, i always buy nvidia cards ... because i need to play doom3 (and ut2004).
if you are sure u never want to play doom3 ... get some _elder_ matrox / Ati
they got good opensourced drivers for 2D support and basic OpenGL
support- usefull 4 Desktop.
The opensourced "nv" module for nvidia OTOH neither supports dualhead,
nor does it support xv
- the last i would call a basic feature - so this ain't either an option.
keep in mind Nvidia = best 3d performance u get, but u are stuck w/
their drivers.

Where I work we've been running NVIDIA dual head (with NVIDIA's
drivers) on 50+ SMP systems for the last 5 years or so. We're doing
very heavy duty 3-D work using Fledermaus (http://www.ivs3d.com/).
There is still an occasional problem with crashes related to NVIDIA and
SMP but it is extremely rare. I have yet to see a crash on a single
processor system due to NVIDIA's driver (this includes the three systems
I use at home).

What I've got is an ATI radeon 9600 m10.
I've tried the fglrx ati packages to no avail.
I am sure the card is capable of dual heads but I am having problems
writing a proper xorg.conf and also the installation shell script with
the ati package just doesn't seem to be modprobing the ati driver into
kernel space at boot-time.
I had this problem about four years ago with a laptop with an nvidia
card in it... I waited about six months and the nvidia support got
better... I don't want to wait for ati's linux support... they are after
all doing the xbox360 so my guess is they will be a little behind the
curve on things linux in the near future.

Okay, so here is the prince of dumb questions...
I have a song in ardour- four tracks... and I want to write it to an
audio cd so I can play it on any cd player... could someone fill in the
blanks for me....
From ardour I export into a _________ file
Then I fire up handy dandy application ___________ and import the file
Then I export it to __________ format
Then I burn an audio cd using that whiz bang app ____________?
This could make for a really hot date people...

Steps 2 & 3 are unnecessary in this method. Make sure your exported
tracks are in 44.1 kHz stereo 16-bit WAV format, a.k.a. redbook CD
audio. Obviously you must have cdrecord and gcombust installed too.
Cdrecord is a standard item included with most (all?) mainstream Linux
distros.

PS: You might want to put in an intermediate step of normalization
and/or some other mastering process, perhaps using JAMin.

Inside ardour you create the regions (in the regions/locations editor) which
should be the songs on the cd. Mark the "CD" checkbox. Than select
File/Export/"Into soundfile" and in the following screen also select the
option to create the toc or cue file. You than get the wave-file for your cd
(be sure to use 44kHz and 16bit) and the toc. cdrdao will burn it and your
cd-player can read the cd...

That's a bummer. I had hoped I might be able to avoid having to
setup another dual boot setup or buy another machine. VMWare seemed
like a promising route and the installation of Cakewalk went really
smoothly. It's just utterly silent ::-).
Bochs seems to have more promising hardware support, but since it
works like a simulator, it's performance is veeeerry slllooow.
Didn't work under Wine either - Cakewalk crashes if I have any of the
Windows core fonts installed. Oddly enough, if only the music
notation font is installed it works... but I can't read anything!
Prospects look dim at this point...
