Hi, Dunno if this is a stupid question or not, and just for orientation... Is it possible to make a sort of 'Ableton Live like setup' with audio synthesis languages like supercollider or pd? E.g. to be able to play/record audio loops, midi stuff, changing parameters like bpm in realtime mode etc? \r

Hi, The remote-python interface in MusE which exposes parts of the playback, mixer and arranger functionality has a very similar aim, live resequencing, for lack of a better word. The idea is to be able to change the current "song" from an external source. E.g. a foot controller. But since it's just a programming interface all kinds of crazy ideas are of course possible.. I've done a bit with supercollider and it's definitely possible to do the sort of thing you are talking about - it has a GUI engine which you can program as well as the audio synth server. It would be a lot of work though unless you can find something similar which someone has already done. andy

Not sure. I've had a quick look and can't see anything but it's possible there may be a 3rd party plugin for this. It does use jack for audio output though. andy

Maybe check out Composite: Composite will be a software application/system for real-time, in-performance sequencing, sampling, and looping. It has a strong emphasis on the needs of live performance improvisation. It is built around the Tritium audio engine, which includes LV2 plugins and developer libraries. It is currently under active development, written in C++ and QT, based on Hydrogen. I know its not SC, but its not Extremely different either! -Harry

Thanks for the mention, but Composite is not Not NOT ready for prime-time. :-) In the future, yes, Composite is intended to provide this sort of functionality. The timeline is something like this: Jan 2010 - Release a standalone sampler (LV2). Q2 2010 - Have something worth talking about. Q4 2010 - A nearly feature-complete, unstable release. I'm not a connoisseur of Ableton Live but the examples you cite are all definitively possible in Pd. Much, of course, depends on what you are after in terms of creative/artistic/aesthetic too. Bests, Lorenzo.

Thanks. All though it's hard for me to get a clear picture about what an udp-port actually is and how that works. Let's see what google can tell me about it...

The problem is that Ardour can't use looping when using JAck Transport. So if want to use looping in Ardour you have to do it internal afaik. This can be done, but how to start non-sequencer and ardour at the same time if ardour isn't set to Jack Transport. Is there something possible via osc and/or jack.osc, to make this possible? this isn't true.

So if want to use looping in Ardour you have to do it internal afaik.

only if you want "seamless" looping. no looping system that is based on telling various programs "go back to here" will ever be seamless. you have to set up the loop points ahead of time to make that possible.

Thats not important. sc already uses osc to communicate between the client and the server, or anything else that speaks osc if its useful (ie. jack.osc... :-) You can loop whatever you want in SC, or other tools if ardour doesnt do what you want. I'm not really familiar with AL, but I've build a quite elaborate setup with chuck. It's a bit in-between-version at the moment, since I'm rewriting some parts. It let's you do some really hip things (IMHO), like control the meta-musical parameters like length-of-notes, atonality, height, stuff like that, provided you build your patterns accordingly. The only, but quite big (read huge, as in show stopper) problem is that chuck is not really performing that well. I'm almost at the edge of what is possible with chuck on my dual core 2.4Ghz laptop. I seem to be the only chuck user needing more speed, so I kinda gave up on the whole thing. I'm developing it further as I need, and waiting for other stuff (like my DAW of choise, renoise) to be ready to live performances. You're more than welcome to have a look, if you'd like... NB: Here's a mobile phone (audio from the house PA) recording of my setup at work: http://virb.com/atte/videos/3109315 Everything except the melodica and the bass is chuck. Atte, Thanks for your generous offer. It looks it's cool stuff indeed. But I think I'd rather search for an supercollider solution atm. Or just using non-sequencer with Ardour and loop Ardour via OSC messages or something, cause it seems to be impossible to loop Ardour with Jack Transport. But then I have to find out how that works with OSC. I don't know anything about it yet. Regards, \r
