Hello!
I recently did a new song that's hopefully eventually going to be in a
smaller upcoming project to showcase some open source/free/Linux stuff. The
song is is like 90%+ finished, and available at:

It's mainly consisting of:
- Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra samples for the orchestral stuff
- TAL NoiseMaker for the bass
- Salamander drums for the drums (maybe the hihat is from The Open Source
Drumkit though, can't remember)
- Various Calf and Linuxdsp-plugins for processing
- Pianoteq for the piano (not open source or free, but Linux atleast =))
..everything composed, mixed and made in ardour3.
I would greatly appreciate any feedback on this! Thanks a ton for listening

Hello Gabbe!
What a nice tune again. I love the feeling, as I have mentioned before.
Remove the drums, and I'd see it in the moanful memories of a movie/radioplay,
put them in and it is not the kargyra moan, buty the Scandinavian moan.
Soothing and sad.
Two things about the production, that poked out: first the bassdrum is quite
loud - in comparison - and rather bulky, seeing, that you chose a bluky
rhythm. If you didn't really want that, then I'd suggest removing a little bit
of the low end - quite amazing, how much you can remove in such a mix - and
then have a look at the compressor again.
Also it seems, that the whole mix is overcompressed, the drums "pump" the
strings aside. As much as I can enjoy this technical artefact as a technique
in newer electronic music, it's blasmpheming against the strings here. If you
just want more loudness in this case, try to compress single tracks -
especially drums and experiment with a limiter, if you must. It could work
very well. I've always had good experiences with the TAP limiter (unique ID
2145), within reasonable bounds, it too sounds good and does the job, without
pumping.
I love the sounds of this piee. It's the first time I heard pianoteq in a
mix and it does work. Also the bass sound was soft and smooth, just as the
piece required. Good usage of the guitar, if it was guitar for effects and
"drama". :-)

I didn't hear that first listen, but then I was running around at the
time, I liked the tune. but on second listen, yeah, the strings sound like
they are cutting out at every beat. I can't say I haven't done the same
thing though.
just want more loudness in this case, try to compress

Ya single tracks. Or just allow more dynamic range though I don't know if
wide dynamics fit this mood best.

Generally I miss some high shizzle in the track. The highhat could be a
candidate, when the drums are out theres not much activity above 5khz. I
tried a 6db boost from 5khz up, brutal I know, but it does makes the
track open up...

Thank you all so much for the feedback! Really appreciate it.
I agree about the drums generally, I think it's an effect of recently
getting the new linuxdsp fairchild plugin, and just going mad with it for
the sake of it! =)
The strings however are "pumping" for a reason, like Atte's talking about;
sidechain compression. I understand that that might be a blasphemy to many
people, and I wasn't really sure about putting it in there, and I'm still
not sure what I think, but atleast it's no accident. It's there on purpose
=)
Atte: I see your point with the high end. I'll look over the mix again once
I've given it some rest. Thanks!
