Hi guys,
I was wondering if someone could recommend a good way of recording RealAudio streams so
that they ultimately end up on disk as .wav or .mp3 or .ogg files.
I looked at Jack, but RealPlay isn't listed as one of Jack's compatible
applications.
I looked for a RealPlay plugin for XMMS (someone said he used that plugin and XMMS's
Disk Writer plugin), but I couldn't find it anyway.
Any help would be most appreciated.

add, because I like it. Surely the problem here is the general
proprietoriness of 'RealAudio'. I have been donated some space on a streaming
Audio server that uses this protocol. Unfortunately at present I have no way
of checking whether it works under Linux. Is this possible?
Is it even desirable?

How about using original Real One player for Linux?

I only just discovered that this exists, unfortunately I've not heard good
things said about it, so I'm not very encouraged. I'm honestly not convinced
of the need to use the protocol at all, it might serve my purposes better
simply to make the tracks downloadable in the normal way. Ideally I wouldn't
be using mp3s either, but that's what I've been given to work with :)

I've used trplayer
http://www.linux-speakup.org/trplayer.html
with vsound
http://www.xenoclast.org/vsound/
and this works.
You can do something like this
vsound -t -f foo.wav trplayer http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/realplayer/dsatg2.ram &
to record BBC Radio 7 to foo.wav.

Check out Vsound, I've used it for .ra files but have not tried a
stream. You'll need to pass the '-t' option so it uses timing delays for
working with a stream.

with mixed (but often positive) results. Audio works much more
reliably than video.

I have succesfully converted realaudio video
streams to VCD
(so I could play them in a standalone DVD player) with mplayer
and mjpegtools. YMMV.
