Hi,
I built a 2.6.12.2 and I see a very confusing thing: I do not
get any capture level on my USB audio card (Terratec Aureon
USB). The monitor channel works (so I know there is at least
a signal coming into the card).
I booted into 2.6.11.7 and it works fine. I remembered the
mixer settings and set them accordingly in 2.6.12.2, but no
luck. Anyone a wee small hint on this issue?

no it doesn't sound like anything - it *is* a modem ;-) .
My fault. Suddenly, when booting 2.6.12.2, my USB card is card
0 instead of the AC 97 one.
Now, the outputs of amixer do not differ between 2.6.10 and
2.6.12.2.
BUT:
* My USB card has always been card 2 (or even three) on
2.6.10. This is the first day that the USB card is card 0
* The USB card now remains as card 0 even in 2.6.10?!?
* In 2.6.12 I get no input, but at least the monitor (direct
throughput) works
* Now in 2.6.10 even the monitor doesn't work
BTW: 2 problems that exists on my box for a long time now is
that
* /etc/init.d/alsasound restart results in
"cat /proc/asound/cards - no soundcards". I have to reboot to
fix this. This is independent from the running kernel. Maybe
I have misconfigured something, or it's a Gentoo bug.
Re-emerging alsa-lib didn't solce the problem
* After a reboot the mixer settings are never restored, all
controls are set to 0. I added alsa to the boot process, and
when shutting down it tells me "Storing mixer levels", but
these do not get restored for any reason. Can anyone tell me
which the file is where alsactl stores the settings? I'd like
to check it
Besides the modules.conf, are there further alsa configuration
files which I could delete to avoid such weird behaviours due
to old config files?

No.

Usually yes, but when you're using different kernels it's best just to
use the latest lib.

rebuilding my 2.6.10 kernel. Maybe I should switch it off (I
don't actually use it...)?

even when the driver modules are loaded in a different

Thanks a lot. Deleted it, but didn't solve the prob (OK, we
didn't really expect it to do so).
Well, the USB card now always appears as card 0. I can deal
with it, but it would be nice to have the AC 97 back as 0 /
default to have the usual news video feed outputting sound to
the onboard speakers of my notebook and to use USB audio
connected to my monitor speakers for audio work only.

that other driver won't be able to take the index it was told to use
and will use the first free one instead.

Hi,
In Gentoo it is split into /etc/modules.d/alsa. It always
worked well with my 2.6 kernels, so I do not expect
configuring the wrong file.
I'll check that and recompile the kernel without this module,
if necessary.
BTW: Many thanks for all your hints I already got. You really
keep me stay tuned to linux audio :) .

You didn't accidentally use /etc/modules.conf instead of
/etc/modprobe.conf? Or probably you compiled the drivers
into the kernel instead of using modules? I remember

in /etc/modules.d?
