After the recent glut of very good stuff coming through the lists, I
feel less inclined to expose myself.
But I will anyway.

Jamin is playing silly buggers, so it hasn't gone through my usual
final compression to sort out levels, but I'm not going to play with
it any more.
I can't play guitar, so I've tried to make something that sounds like
an electric guitar. It's actually a mangled sample from ZynAddSubFX,
so it's probably better to call it an ecclectic guitar.
Anyway, comments not just welcomed, but begged for, as usual.

I fiddled with zynaddsubfx until I had a sound I liked and then
recorded one note held for about 10 seconds.
I then used this as an instrument in cheesetracker. It makes up the
stringy sounds, with reverb on it and the guitar with reverb before
and after heavy ditortion.

Thanks. Both ZynAddSubFX and Cheesetracker sound interesting--yet *more*
applications to research and try of the now astonishinly rich set of
Linux and open-source tools for musicians and audio pros and
enthusiasts. It's hard to keep up. ;-)

that's great - cos, man, i'm so in love with your stuff .... you have a
beautiful grasp of melody, and a nice edge of aggression. the two most
important things in music, to me.
this awakens into life so sublimely ... nice use of filters on yr
ecclectic guitar (that's great), but i feel you should bring the lighter
keys out a bit more, create a bit more interplay between them and
ZynAddSubFX (that interplay is probly already there, just a bit buried?).
i'll say it again, though - you're songs rock. any chance i could add

I used it on vocals on this track

Have you tried getting Modedit working under DOSemu ? I just tried it,
it will load and run but I haven't got any sound out of it yet. I've run
a few audio programs under DOSemu, with varied success, you might be
able to make it work though.

though, I think the example MOD's samples are 8-bit at a low sample
rate. The samples are in SAM format, I haven't figured out how to check
their headers. Any advice ?

They are raw, IRRC, 8 bit unsigned or some such.
Any advice ?
(find someone to) help me reimplement the user interface with modern
technologies like JACK, alsa seq and OSC :-).
I think if we extended the sample slot editor to allow for all different
types of "events", the same UI concept could be used to make great music...
* Define instruments
* Choose current instrument
* Use RET to set notes.
The tick quantisation will be an issue, but I am sure we could work out something.

I started with the NCurses howto when I barely knew howto program.
after some simple setup, you just replace familiar I/O such as printf
w/ mvprintf. its easy.

also, check the system your running. most standard Linux distros
these days come with a full documentation/howto section. usually in

Have you tried cheesetracker? It's from the screamtracker lineage, so
if you ever used that or impulse, you'll feel right at home and have
so many new toys to boot.

Well, give it a kick and see if it's still breathing, 'cause some
tweaking would be nice. E.g. the piano at the beginning is "lost in the
forest".
I would also beef it up with a couple more instruments, the stage is a
tad hollow for my taste (I hear the idea but it's not fleshed out
enough), but maybe that's just me. Alternatively, the slight hollowness
might be caused by an unfinished mixing/mastering. I can't really make
up my mind.
Don't hesitate to use panning more generously. Maybe that's part of the

final compression to sort out levels
Well, give it a kick and see if it's still breathing, 'cause some
tweaking would be nice. E.g. the piano at the beginning is "lost in the
forest".
I would also beef it up with a couple more instruments, the stage is a
tad hollow for my taste (I hear the idea but it's not fleshed out
enough), but maybe that's just me. Alternatively, the slight hollowness
might be caused by an unfinished mixing/mastering. I can't really make
up my mind.
Don't hesitate to use panning more generously. Maybe that's part of the
slight hollowness issue.

I use -q7, it results in a decent sound quality and a file about as
large as an MP3 at a bitrate of 192 kbps. Best,

I could not help myself but made a remix adding the (in my mind) missing
piece, vocals..
I had to re-cut it somewhat which isn't seam free... also it added unpleasant
clicks at times which I didn't manage to resolve, but that's for free ;)

it any more.
I can't play guitar, so I've tried to make something that sounds like
an electric guitar. It's actually a mangled sample from ZynAddSubFX,
so it's probably better to call it an ecclectic guitar.
Anyway, comments not just welcomed, but begged for, as usual.
